Plagued by lions and packs of wolves that hunt his herds, Jarred Telriech seeks the help of a Royal Huntsman, known only as Gunther. In exchange for a share of Pembrooke's cattle profits, Telriech convinces the huntsman to move to Pembrooke and organize some of the farmhands into groups that protect the Steppes, protecting the herds. They become known as Gunther's Riders.
