Garrin of Krellia

Explorer and Author

Part of the early expeditions that explored eastern Tarien - past the deserts of Carboth and into the Jungles of Thallox - Garrin penned a series of maps of that area that are still among the most definitive in the Imperial collection. He is best known, however, for a work of fiction entitled Noble Savages. The novel, written in the mid-fourth century, tells the tale of Hathric, Kari-Zaro warrior that leaves the villages of his birth and travels to Karradone where he attends the University and becomes embroiled in various plots and schemes led by unsavory Eldorian nobles.

The novel portrays Hathrik as both a victim and an ideal to which one might aspire. His society, while backward, is governed by simple, clear morals. Respect ones elders. Take only what one needs. Give to the needs of the community. In contrast, his experience with Eldorian high society portrays them in a much darker shade. Between backbiting, infighting and outright lies, Garrin paints an unsavory picture of Eldorian nobility. If one were to believe his novel, all nobles in Eldoria were greedy, self-centered, and willing to crush the backs of their own children to attain and retain power. While the book earned a number of literary accolades at the time, it earned the author the enmity of the nobility and he soon found himself blacklisted, first form social events and then from the ability to publish. Garrin died a decade after the publication of the book of a wasting disease without a copper to his name.
