Noble Savages

Fictional Work

Written by the explorer and cartographer Garrin of Krellia in 345 AC, this novel presents as critical look at the Eldorian nobility at the height of the Empire's power and influence. The tale, in which a Kari-Zaro warrior is persuaded to leave his village, lured to Karradone by disreputable nobles who pay for him to attend the University of Karradone, contrasts the noble simplicity of Kari-Zaro existing as a juxtaposition against the corruption of Eldorian nobility. Hathric, the poor warrior, is confronted with duplicity and shenanigans at every turn, challenging his simple and honest morals at every turn as he humorously foils their plots, often without even trying.

At the time the novel was seen as a bold political statement. Perceived as a scathing indictment of self-serving nobility, it left Garrin both socially and economically destitute. The lens of history, however, does not look as kindly upon the work. Scholars today see his treatment of the Kari-zaro - in particular the over simplification of their culture - as yet another Eldorian attempt at subversion.
