Ceremony Center

Structure of the Aviary

Above the Treehouses of Avolotia, the Mages created a space in the trees where the Avies can celebrate with their feathered friends in peace. The structure is made of one-way glass with the appearance of leaves and branches from the outside.

Naming Night

Every other decade when Lumin passes through the night sky, the community gathers in the Ceremony Center. All eligible children, aged 30-60, gather in the center of the aviary with the rest of the Avies gathered around them. The Sages come forward to begin welcoming the New Names into their positions in the community. The rites are stated by the Sages, each child is given time to share their desired positions, and a call and response begins between the Sages and candidates.
After the Calling of Names, all of the Avies celebrate the rest of Lumin's passing by sampling new recipes, dancing with owls, and bestowing gifts to the Sages and Newly Named Candidates.

Preparations

Before their Naming Night, children are encouraged to explore multiple positions within the community. When their knacks appear, they shadow their positions of choice more often. When the leaders of their position of choice believe the child is ready, they recommend counseling with the Sages. If the Sages believe the Avie has prepared enough, they will officially be listed as a candidate for the next Naming Night.   Each candidate is assigned a primary and secondary position within the community of: chef, healer, craftsperson, gatherer, scout, sentry, or mage. Their new name is based on this choice. Common Names
  • Chefs choose names inspired by the local flora or fauna
  • Healers often chose important flora or spell components related to their work, although, a few have chosen water related names based on its natural healing properties.
  • Craftspersons find their names in the local flora, particularly trees.
  • Gatherers pick their names after the fauna they most resemble or admire.
  • Scouts choose names that resemble their favorite bird calls.
  • Sentries prefer names that float on the wind. To all outside the community, these names may sound like rustling of leaves, but Avies know the difference.
  • Mages often choose their names from powerful spell components. Occasionally, a future mage will choose a name that comes to them in a vision.

Children are asked to consider their names wisely as they are not changed unless something dramatic occurs. The Exceptions
There are few instances of an Avie changing their name. If they are able to maintain their primary position, they must appeal to the Sages. After long discussions and counseling, a new name may be chosen. If, however, they cannot maintain their primary position or are promoted to Sage, Avies are permitted to change their name to match their new position. This decision lies solely on the feathers of the Avie.

Other Known Ceremonies

There are many other ceremonies performed in the Aviary including, but not limited to:
  • Memory of the Sages
  • Call of the Wild
  • Spirit's Flight
Lumin: Comets pass above this region once every 20 years around the new moon of the growing season.
