Antoine Dumas Character in Talitha Harbor | World Anvil

Antoine Dumas

Playwright Antoine Dumas

Antoine Dumas is the lead and playwright of the only traveling troupe in all of Talitha Harbor. Antoine has created a life of his own so he can share his love for storytelling with all who want to listen.

Physical Description

Special abilities

Along with story telling and acting, Antoine is a fair singer. He has created a few musicals in his time, though it's not a favorite medium for him. He finds writing prose easier than writing song.

Apparel & Accessories

Given his role as a performer, Antoine doesn't wear the plain credit clothes, that many of the Talithan residents wear. He wants to stand out and has learned how to sew and make clothes himself.   As his popularity has grown he hasn't had to sew a lot of his own creative clothes anymore, there are fans who are willing to take on projects for him or simply gift him their own designs.   When he is gifted experimental clothing designs Antoine will often use them as inspiration. He'll create stories or songs for them and wait until he is able to tell the story before he wears his gift.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Antoine was born in The City of Pangu. His childhood was a happy one, and typical for a child growing up in Talitha Harbor. He grew up loving the stories that the Caregivers told the children in their charge. When he reached age ten, one of his Vocation requests was for the Education. He wanted to become a Caregiver and tell those same stories that he loved.   One day, when he was fourteen, the Education Schoolhouse took all their students to watch a play. The play was a dramatization of the history of Captain Eduard Antonis Drake. Antoine fell in love with the performance and knew exactly what he wanted to do with his life. With theater and acting, he could share stories with all of Talitha.   When Antoine turned sixteen, he announced his plans during the Sixteen Sol Ceremony. He wouldn’t join a Vocation. Instead, he would strike out on his own.   Antoine joined the same playhouse that he had visited. He loved acting, but only those who paid and visited the playhouse would hear the stories. Antoine wanted to bring stories to more Talithans. Once he felt that his acting was skilled enough, he left the playhouse and struck out on his own.   He started with one man plays in various art venues around Pangu. He also visited the primary schools and offered to put on shows for the young ones. The Caretakers were more than happy to let him. This thoughtful move, more so than his public shows, spread his name throughout Pangu.   As word spread through Pangu and to the other Cities, Talithans started asking to join him. It didn’t take him long to gather a small group of actors. With them, he could create his troupe.   Those who liked the shows the troupe put on in public left tips or other goods. Antoine never wanted to limit who could visit and so he never required payment. The Talithan economy system takes care of all his basic needs, and that is good enough for him.

Gender Identity

Antoine declared himself a boy when he was young and has continued to introduce himself with he/him.

Sexuality

queer and polyamrous

Employment

Antoine manages a troupe of actors that call themselves The Dumas Traveling Troupe. Most of their traveling is just around Pangu, but a couple of times a year they go to the other Great Cities and put on shows.   When they travel they always draw large crowds. These productions are usually outside on a stage of some sort. Antoine likes to use whatever he can find naturally and change things up. He doesn't use a lot of grand props. Intead the audience gets voice, acting, and their imagination.   Antoine always brings a new story to these shows.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Antonie is the only traveling theater troupe in Talitha. There are play houses in each of the Great Cities, but they all use a static set of actors and request some form of payment.   He is also very prolific with his writing. He'll write silly short stories as well as long epic tales. He's made plays for all ages. There is nothing that Antonie loves better than delivering a story and it shows.

Interesting character. It is especially funny how people just want to design crazy outfits for him :p Also a nice touch to have a few pieces of prose throughout the article.   I think it would be nice to switch the order of things a bit around so that the article starts with a small summary of who he is :)

Thanks for the input! I ended up just using the article prompts. I'll have to give him a good intro as well.

Nice article. Just a heads up you use; trope, troop, troup and troupe, all mixed up, not sure if that's intentional and I don't see the difference as English is not my first language. The story exerpts are very nice, giving a peak into a whole other world.

Um, not intentional. Ooops, thanks! I'll go through and edit.

I love that he made a name for himself performing for kids first. I've seen that actually work really well in the real world, so it felt very real and was a great differentiator for your bard.

Nice bard! I like that the government system allows him to do whatever he wants without caring about getting enough money to buy food :D I like the short excerpts you have of one of his story! Do you have example of the types of outfits that have inspired some of his stories?

I should come up with some specific examples. I want to start making little sketches for the site (I have some partially completed ones) and that's a good, quicker, thing that I can sketch.   Thank you for the comment and the idea.

Kids, the best advertising in the world. put on a play they enjoy at their school and then hit them with "and we have a show at _________ this weeked, if your parents can bring you." I like his deviousness. I mean clever use of advertising using the power of children.   I also enjoyed the "he finds writing prose easier than writing song," a very apt quote to include in a bard challenge.

Feel free to stop by some of my WorldEmber articles if you want. My favorites are The Book of the Unquiet Dead, Outpost of the Moons, and The Emerald Hills. Feedback is always appreciated.

Love the Dumas reference - good see his story isn't as tragic as Alexandre or Thomas though! ;-)

I love the idea that people who are fans of him make outfits for him. That's such a nice detail. I bet it saves him some time not having to make his own clothes! :D   I love the extracts that are written by him.

It's an exciting story with a promise of something bigger — a short story, maybe a book?   I wonder about the story of Jaya the Explorer. Is there a connection between them and Antoine? Also, what makes this particular piece special among his writings?
