Chevsi Settlement in Spirit of the Age | World Anvil

Chevsi

The island of Triviri has some of the more plentiful iron deposits in the Tescaries, and they are comparatively easy to exploit. As a result, a number of clans on the island have specialized in the production or iron and crucible steel, as well as tools made from these substances. In many cases so specialized that they buy much of the food they eat from other Triviri clans (or even clans further away), these ironmaking clans have founded the town of Chevsi on the southern shores of the island, pooling their resources and forming a confederation. The council of chiefs that rules in Chevsi has come to include the entire island in its tributary network, and the chief of the prominent Halistrea clan is often titled "King of Triviri".   Built downriver from some of the richest iron deposits on the island, Chevsi houses most of the facilities these clans use that are not the actual mines themselves. Living spaces, great halls, markets, specialized ore barges, and crucibles, like most Tescarana towns, Chevsi is build around its port.

Government

Chevsi is ruled by four clan councils in name, though in practice Halistrea has the greatest say in matters. Inhabited by members of the four urban ironmaking clans, those who live in the city almost invariably fall within these clan hierarchies. Visitors are usually short-term, or from other Triviri clans in Chevsi's orbit. As a result, the Chevsians levy no taxes except for the semi-formal systems of tribute within the island communities. The clan councils rely on community labor to develop the town.

Industry & Trade

Living off the products of its crucibles and smiths, the artisans of the Houses of Iron produce much more than they, or even the clans of Triviri can use. Largely barter based, though using iron, nacre shells, and jars of dye as measures of value, the Chevsians have historically been the source of much of the iron in the Eastern Archipelago. In recent times, their position has been shaken as the Kilthians increasingly ship dwarven steel through the Duchy of Fahrig. The Chevsians have lost customers, but the Kingdom of Triviri remains intact. These days, the Chevsians sell mainly to Eterti clans, even if they themselves try to avoid taking an obvious stance against the Runberi.

This settlement sounds very interesting. I like that it is formed of clans of ironworkers. :)
