The Galactic Coalition is a political coalition made up of different planets and their governments. The federation allows the members to operate semi-autonomously but has a set way of rules that they follow. All members have equal standing in the Coalition government.
The purpose of the Galactic Coalition is to promote unity and comradery between planets. It started as an organization focused on maintaining relations but as time passed and as planets became more and more intertwined the Coalition grew to be a loose government that protects the rights and territories of the numerous member planets.
There are also planets that have treaties and agreements with the Coalition without being official members. They may have been rejected membership but the more common reason is that the planet doesn’t want to become a full member for some reason or another.
The Government of the Coalition is seated on the planet Athea, where all of the important government buildings are kept.
The Coalition House of Representatives
The Coalition is governed by a council made up of representatives, referred to as Representatives or as Members of the House, from all of the member planets. It functions as the legislative and executive branches of the Galactic Coalition.
This council is headed by a Chairperson who presides over the council meetings and is responsible for implementing the laws that the council decides on. The chairperson can also veto a decision made by the council.
Each of the representatives is chosen by their home planet’s government and their job is to advocate for their planet and people in the Coalition government. They may also go to the Coalition government if their planet is in time of need and requires emergency help or regulations.
The length of the term varies from planet to planet, with the planetary government who chooses the representative being the one to set the length. On Athea the length of a term is five years.
Coalition Courts of Justice
The Coalition’s judicial branch is made up of numerous courts that are presided over by a judge, who gives a sentence; a jury, who determines innocence or guilt; a prosecuting attorney; and a defense attorney.
The cases brought to the Coalition Courts are often either high-profile cases taking place on Coalition-owned territory (Athea, Coalition colonies, bases, and stations), cases where the offender had committed serious crimes on multiple planets, and cases where the rules or laws of the Coalition were broken.
Most of these cases tend to lead to government officials, military personnel, and such being the people who most often got to the Coalition courts of justice. All other cases are handled by the planetary governments where the offender committed their crime.
