Mythological-class

The battlecruiser design is an old design, dating back to before the First World War, but then fell out of favour due to treaties and the world navies switching to submarines and aircraft carriers as the capital ships of their navies. The design philosophy of the advocates for the reintroduction of the concept of battlecruisers were that should the ship find them self in a situation where they had to run down smaller and weaker enemies, they could use their greater speed or they could use their battleship caliber guns to defeat enemy cruisers.   The first of the new class of battlecruisers laid down was named after the first class of battlecruisers, the Invincible class, which served as a testbed for the design.   In 2430 the first of the Mythological-class were laid down at the shipyard orbiting Mars. The first of the class, the Athena, the construction of her revealed a need for improved heat dissipation systems for the guns as well as minor adjustments to the general layout of the ship. Due to the changes in the design, the rest of the class was delayed for a year until construction resumed with the new changes to the design. To speed up the construction of the class, it was decided to build half of them around Mars and the rest at other shipyards in the Empire.   the Mythological-class battlecrusiers have gained a reputation as being a command given to captains that are able to show initiative and the ability to operate independently from the rest of the fleet for an extensive period of time.   Each of the ships in the class is named after Mythological figures from Earth's past and as something unique to the fleet, the ships have a painting of the deity or creature they are named after, like EES Freya who has a representation of the Norse goddess proudly painted on the bow of the ship.

I love that they have a reputation for the kind of captain that gets given command of them. And the fact they are all named after mythological figures. :)
