Whispers of the engine

It is said that ships have a personality whether they are built with one or acquired from the time spent with their crew, is still a debate that will cause a fight among crews. One place where this personality comes forth is in the engine room of the ships, it said that if the captain wants more power from the ship, maybe to chase down a fleeing enemy, they will have to address the ship as if it was a person and give it the request. If the ship would accept the request it said that the engine for reasons that are still not understood by science and I hold fast in the belief that it's still a superstition from the sailors, but it said that the engine would put out power way beyond the amount it was designed for and had shown during trials. During this event, it's said that those in the engine room can hear whispers coming from the engine, the crew are never able to tell what they hear during these times only that there are some whispers. I believe that it's just the ship´s onboard AI that makes the whispers in the effort to raise the crew's morale and goes past the safety setting on the engines.

The whispers have entered into popular culture in the form of several books where the ship has a personality that may be based on previous ships of the ship carries a new of an older ship. A famous book takes this to the extreme with a ship that changed name halfway through its service and this resulted in a ship's personality that is split between these two and the catastrophic effects this have on the ship and its crew.
