Session 2, Scene 2: The truth about the Adventuring Society
Plot points/Scenes
The society lead the group to a house just off the beaten track, but still on campus. It's quite old, somewhat gothic in style, with ivy growing up the walls obscuring dark brickwork. Leading the group through a side gate, round the side of the building, Hallia Vedalken introduces the building as the Adventuring Society house.
The garden is somewhat overgrown, but has an area cleared of bushes and trees, with nicely looked after grass, and an array of rather battered targets, dummies and training posts.
DC15 investigation check to figure out that these things have been damaged by real weapons, and real spells.
The group are led through into a large greenhouse-like structure. Outside, it looks like an old greenhouse. Some of the panes are cracked, the structure is a bit rusty in places, and the stonework that supports it all is starting to crumble a little. Inside, there are curtains hung in the windows to keep the room cool, there is an area of padding on he floor to the centre of the room, and there are more targets and equipment stored neatly round the outside of the padded area. There are a few seats in the central section of the room, and a few barrels and other items that clearly are not chairs, but are being repurposed as chairs here.
The society, led by Hallia, describe the true nature of the Caffeinehagen University Adventuring Society:
- They're not a LARPing group
- What they're about to tell everyone must not leave the room
- The Adventuring Society is a real Adventuring Group
- They will reveal the true nature of the group, but first they will give people an opportunity to leave if they don't want to continue
- If you want to join the group, you must be ready to fight. For real. You must be ready to live on the edge of the law, and stray beyond it. For real. You must be ready to help people that need it. For real. And you must be ready to put your life on the line to help them. For real
- They offer everyone a chance to leave. A few people do. Someone leans in to one of the group and says "I love this, the immersion level is off the scale!"
- The group reiterate that before they tell everyone exactly what they're signing up for, if you're not willing to be a real adventurer, you should leave now
- They make sure to let everyone know that there's no shame in walking away, adventuring isn't for everyone, and they know a great LARPing group that people can join, just hit them up around campus for the details
- So, why are we here? Well, if it isn't too grand an ambition - to put the world to rights
The four of us have found that we have something in common - the shadows. History has forced us all to live in the shadows. It forced our parents to live in the shadows, it forced our ancestors to live in the shadows - to live in hiding from the authorities that say they will take care of us. The same authorities that took everything from our communities - our possessions, our homes, our freedom, our dignity. We were made to be outsiders, forced into poverty while the wealthy and powerful appropriated our customs, our knowledge and our heirlooms - stealing from our communities and flaunting our creations - the relics that gave our communities their identity and power - as their own.
I guess you didn't hear about any of this at school? No, of course not, because our ancestors didn't get to write their own stories. They got to be the villains of everyone else's stories, and then for their troubles they could go to a museum or a stately home and look at a bunch of their own stuff. Their own stuff, the theft of which is being paraded as the outcome of a cultural connection initiative or a diplomatic mission.
We came together through a shared curiosity about our ancestry. We wanted to find out everything we could about the history of our communities, and the more we discovered, the more this fire started to burn within all of us.
We wanted to try to right some of these wrongs, so we formed the adventuring society with the mission that we would take back what was taken from our communities, from our cultures, and we would return what we could to what is left of our people.
While we don't expect everyone in this room to sympathise with, or even believe us, and we can't expect you to all feel as strongly for our cause as we do, if you want to experience real adventure, if you feel like an outsider too, or if you want to be an ally, you are most welcome to join us on our mission.
A couple of people leave, stating it sounds too risky for them etc.
The remaining people are invited to the Student's Union for a night out. They're going to meet at the food stalls at 8pm.
