House Egret

House Egret prides themselves on their fishing and husbandry skills. As one of the first families to settle in Atchafalaya alongside House Crawfish, they wield formidable political clout in the city. Members of this house can often be found swimming in the river, monitoring or harvesting the various fish and shellfish species that they cultivate. Like most of the other Houses in the city, House Egret is comprised of a core family that includes the blood and bond relatives of the Elder, including their Heir, and a much looser collection of adopted members of the house, who may or may not be related to the core family. Adopted members are welcomed into the house by the Elder in a ceremonial supper that centers around the family's Mukacho Hereditary Recipe

Structure

Leader (internal affairs): Elder Egret; a matrilineal title descended from the first Egret elder.
Leader (external affairs): Heir Egret; a daughter (either blood or bond) of the current Elder.  Can be changed by the Elder at any time.  Heirs that were replaced by their Elder are designated as Heir Emeritus
Core Nest (main leadership): Venerable Egrets; all of the people that are part of the blood-and-bond family of the current Elder.  When an Elder passes and a new Elder takes the title, some people who were considered Venerable Egrets may become Honorary Egrets due to a lack of closeness with the new Elder.  Venerable Egrets manage the long-term project planning and coordination for the family.
Auxillary Nests: Honorary Egrets; all other members of the House.  These form the day-to-day fishers and animal husbandry workers, helping to maintain the fauna of Atchafalaya and the surrounding bayou.  Honorary Egrets who build close ties with the Elder or Heir may end up joining the Core Nest.

Culture

House Egret prides themselves on their modernity.  They embrace new technologies as they come along, and are almost always on the cutting edge.  They also pride themselves on working with the natural order instead of against it; they would never alter the landscape like House Turkey does with some of their crop fields, instead preferring to follow the local fish and shellfish to their own preferred locations.

Family Tree

Close allies

House Egret thinks that House Crawfish understands the need to seek out new environments to better know the world.  House Crawfish thinks that House Egret understands the need to always challenge yourself to improve.  Their Heirs often work together outside of official meetings to help set policy for Atchafalaya.

Allies

House Egret thinks that House Racoon are great allies to have when you need something built, but too secretive for their own good. House Racoon thinks that House Egret is full of busybodies that should keep their noses out of intrafamily decisions.  Their Heirs rarely have trouble agreeing on issues for the betterment of Atchafalaya, but when they do fight, everyone else should beware, for both Houses are incredibly stubborn.

Friendly but contemptuous

House Egret regards House Turkey as somewhat blasphemous because they attempt to reshape the natural patterns of the bayou to grow more and different crops.  House Turkey thinks that House Egret is foolish for not taking the most efficient methods when cultivating resources that the city needs. This strains discussions between the houses, and Heirs may have trouble negotiating solutions when trying to decide on the future growth of Atchafalaya
