House Crawfish

House Crawfish prides themselves on their materials engineering skills. As one of the first families to settle in Atchafalaya alongside House Egret, they wield formidable political clout in the city. Members of this house can often be found in various labs, creating new materials and working with gats. Like most of the other Houses in the city, House Crawfish is comprised of a core family that includes the blood and bond relatives of the Elder, including their Heir, and a much looser collection of adopted members of the house, who may or may not be related to the core family. Adopted members are welcomed into the house by the Elder in a ceremonial supper that centers around the family's Crawfish Buyafay Hereditary Recipe

Structure

Leader (internal affairs): Elder Crawfish; a matrilineal title descended from the first Egret elder.
Leader (external affairs): Heir Crawfish; a daughter (either blood or bond) of the current Elder. Can be changed by the Elder at any time. Heirs that were replaced by their Elder are designated as Heir Emeritus
Core Mound (main leadership): Venerable Crawfish; all of the people that are part of the blood-and-bond family of the current Elder. When an Elder passes and a new Elder takes the title, some people who were considered Venerable Crawfish may become Honorary Crawfish due to a lack of closeness with the new Elder. Venerable Crawfish manage the long-term project planning and coordination for the family.
Auxillary Burrows: Honorary Crawfish; all other members of the House. These form the day-to-day scientists and device builders, helping to invent new and interesting materials and stretch the usage of existing materials to their limit. Honorary Crawfish who build close ties with the Elder or Heir may end up joining the Core Burrow.

Culture

House Crawfish prides themselves on their recklessness. They will try anything once, and will likely write down the results after they do it.  They also pride themselves on pushing limits - both their own, and those of the people and things around them. This is how they have made many amazing scientific discoveries, but equally how they have alienated many allies.

Close allies

House Egret thinks that House Crawfish understands the need to seek out new environments to better know the world.  House Crawfish thinks that House Egret understands the need to always challenge yourself to improve.  Their Heirs often work together outside of official meetings to help set policy for Atchafalaya.

Close allies

House Crawfish thinks that House Gator is incredibly useful to have around when something goes tails up with a new experiment.  House Gator thinks that House Crawfish is a little reckless, but good enough sports about listening to doctors' instructions. Their Heirs often agree on the direction to lead Atchafalaya.

Friendly but contemptuous

House Crawfish thinks that House Turkey often takes the easy way out, reshaping the world to make life more simple. House Turkey thinks that House Crawfish invents challenges and dangers where none are needed. Their Heirs often end up at loggerheads when discussing changes to Atchafalaya, because they have radically different ways of living.

Friendly but exasperated

House Crawfish thinks that House Racoon is kind of boring; they always want materials that work well within a much wider set of circumstances than what is strictly necessary. House Racoon thinks that House Crawfish is nice to have around, but that you should keep an eye on them to make sure they aren't cutting corners just for the thrill of it. Despite this, their Heirs work together well on projects that involve building new structures for Atchafalaya.

Allies

House Crawfish thinks that House Armadillo is the fun kind of paranoid; they always make funny reactions when a material reacts unexpectedly. House Armadillo thinks that House Crawfish is great for making gear, but not to be relied upon in times of danger; those fools will likely charge in headfirst. Their Heirs don't usually care about the other one's strategies for improving Atchafalaya.
