Meneval

"Never has there been a sight as shining and beautiful, yet so deeply saddening, to know that life will only thrive in the shadow of the former splendor..."

--The first diplomat sent to Meneval, following the Menevali Isolation Period, in 671 AB

Meneval is the center of the rebuilt Erinion, of a people who try endlessly to replicate the great Ancient Elven Empire of Erinion, to no avail. The Menevali Elves worship the Themes for a pantheon, revering their tenacity towards balance and their art and music reflect it, showing sharp angles in symmetrical forms, or sounds warping and swaying between notes, always beautiful in any direction.   The greatest advancement the Menevali have made, however, is in the form of the Divine. The Darkness in the Isles of Erinion plagued the Menevali from their founding to the current day, but through faith and sacrifice they have learned great stories of the Themes, and through those can perform feats of magical healing and mending and miracle unachievable to the divine practitioners of the other faiths.   Of the Arcane magics discovered and stolen from their ancient Empire, they have acquired no such secrets. They see in the East, the great Aeries where dragons and elves once held discussions over the mysteries still uncovered, however few, in the nature of The Planar Danse of Histories. The current civilization can not build towers as high, or wonders as great, as they simply just do not have the arcane magics that their ancestors did.   After the Burning of Erinion, the fleeing elven population rebuilt with the goblinoid allies or fled to the other races which the Olde Elves protected. Essentially, the Second Jeriec Empire is more akin to a rebuilding of the Erinion Empire than Meneval is, as it follows many of the same customs and laws and government. Forever feeling the sting of the loss of Erinion, as well as knowing there are secrets in the Isles to be found led City Elves in 190 AB to return to the Isles of Erinion, and begin rebuilding their own people.   These people isolated themselves, creating a culture of independence and pride in oneself for being able to fight the beasts in the world alone. This is the stigma usually surrounding the Menevali Elves in current times, and is usually only true in the areas of religion, when the Menevali do tend to believe they have the correct answer for everything, for theirs is the oldest religion. In 670 AB, the city of Meneval ended this practice of isolationism and opened to the world, as ordered by the sage, the Crystal Sibyl.   With the discovery and control of arcane magic by the City-States of the Bay of Evandyr, the first few decades of amiable relations between the City-States and Meneval ended. The City-States wanted total control on arcane magic, a monopoly that would keep them in power and on top of the world, while the Meneval Elves desperately needed the arcane magics to bring Erinion to the great heights that it lost. Tensions have risen over the years, as the other civilizations have shown their misuse of the magic Runes.   Approximate population of permanent residents in the 850s is 50,000. This is majorly Menevali Elves, of around 80%, with 12% more of the goblinoid races, allies of the elves in ages past.
