Volskarth

Placeholder Quote.
Volskarth, officially the Kingdom of Volskarth (Konungsríki Volskarð), is a kingdom of Eletheros centered along the northernmost point of the continent outside of the Ikuroutan Peninsula. Numerous small island chains off the continental coasts are considered to fall within its domain, though Rauðvikeyjar, the large island landmass off its northeastern shores, is majority uncolonized by kithfolk and thus only theoretically within the lands of Volskarth due to its uninhabitability.   The land of Volskarth is considered the historical origin of the Urskan people. Volskarth was preceded by the kingdom of Urskaþjóð, which was the first unified nation of the Urskan tribes stemming from the Mýllðingr clan of modern-day Askavirki and once stretched far enough to reach into the territories of what is now Halvinar, Lispole, and Jetgerija.

Structure

King

Sigbjörn Ögrisson Konungr is the current king of Volskarth and the head of the Einmýr clan, an early ally clan of the Mýllðingar in the early days of Urskaþjóð's foundation. Sigbjörn inherited the role from his father, Ögri Galtisson, but gained fame and good way across the lands in his early years after arranging peace agreements with the giant clans of the North Ashen Mountains in his youth.   Though famed for his prowess in battle even in his younger years, it was this penchant for diplomacy and wise implementation of law which so thoroughly entrenched his position as king following the death of his father in 1432. The Einmýr clan has maintained relative security in its position across the course of his rule due to the strong bonds he forged with neighboring powerful clans decades prior. Both he and his son have been successful in defending their claim against direct challenges in the form of duels; though such challenges are not required to be accepted, their repeated victories have won them great respect in the eyes of standing chiefs.

Hǫfðingir

The hǫfðingir (meaning "chiefs" or "chieftains" in Durranian) are clan leaders, each bearing complete control over his lands and titles so long as no decrees interfere with that of the king. The lands of Volskarth were heavily divided before the days of Urskaþjóð, and fierce independence of the local lords remains the custom despite their fealty to the king. Direct challenges to the Einmýr and their holds are considered declarations of war – the holds of the offending clan to be taken and distributed among the neighboring clans who will fight in the name of their king – but skirmishes or violent disputes between greater and lesser clans alike are still viewed as something of a commonality. A hǫfðingr's clan is not permitted to acquire a greater sum of lands, riches, or funds than the ruling Einmýr, and all-out war between clans is considered an act of betrayal by the belligerent faction to be treated with the same regard as direct offenders to the ruling clan, but smaller displays of violence or officiated hólmganga duels between lords are fully permitted.   Sigurðr Sigbjörnsson, Sigbjörn Konungr's son and heir, is considered the acting hǫfðingr of the Einmýr whilst his father attends to the realm. A more ferocious warrior even than his father, Sigurðr's prowess in open combat and duels alike has won the great clan a plentiful sum of victories against would-be challengers to the throne.
