Giant Species in Saradon | World Anvil

Giant

Though the true name for their species, taken from their own language, is "rotai", these massive creatures are much more commonly referred to as giants due to their tremendous size alone. Larger than any other living land-dwelling beast and dwarfed only by the dragons of old, most giants choose to live peaceful, solitary lives in their native lands of Southern Arekahs, rarely attempting to communicate or work alongside kith.   Due to their extreme sizes and massive strength, they have been the subject of both legend and worship for a handful of ancient cultures, and some old myths tell tales of times when the massive humanoids stood hundreds of feet high with their heads brushing the clouds, but no records have ever been found suggesting any creatures of such a size, so the myths were likely just that.

Basic Information

Anatomy

As their common name might suggest, a giant stands massive in comparison to most other goblinoid species, towering above the heads of others at anywhere from twelve to sixteen feet in height. Their build is more wide and stocky than a human's to support the immense weight of their bodies and, while this gives them the strength of a dozen oxes, it makes their moves sluggish and unresponsive. Their arms are also lengthier than an average human's in comparison to their forms, with fingertips that extend just past their knees in most cases.   Their facial structures are somewhat like a combination of an orc's and a human's with the added feature of a heavy and more forward-jutting brow, and they bear similar musculature to goblinoid kith races overall. Their skin color is bland without much variation between individuals, ranging from a dull tanned gray to a darker brown in color. It's rough and somewhat coarse to the touch, and thick enough that and average steel-tipped arrow or dagger would have quite a bit of trouble puncturing all the way through it.   The rest of their bodies are, more or less, what one might expect to see from an especially widely-built human or orc. Save for the reach of their arms, their proportions are all very similar and their hair grows the longest atop their head, at their groin, and around the lips and cheeks for males.

Civilization and Culture

Culture and Cultural Heritage

What little is known about the indigenous culture of various giant tribes comes mostly from the single accounts of wanderers accepted momentarily into their communities or important nobles who managed to hold court with the massive beings - and the recollections gathered from these instances are not very telling. Giants seem to near-universally be a very insular sort, living far away from any other sapient races and interacting with outsiders almost solely for the purposes of self defence or desperation.   The largest and likely oldest of remaining giant communities lies in the rolling hills and jutting mountains of southeastern Arekahs, a region known to the giant's tongue as 'Rotiak Gahr' (simply 'Land of the Giants' in Durranian). While most probably that this area retains the highest amount of indigenous rotai culture, though as aforementioned has little documentation surrounding anything south of the borders tentatively established by southern Arekian kingdoms. The only other rgiant communities which exist outside of Rotiak Gahr are within the mountains of northern Eletheros and central Ivskia.
The many tribes and nations of Arekahs occasionally send gifts for continued peace or simple offers for trade deals southward towards Rotiak Gahr, but are rarely otherwise acknowledged, and the only interactions that the northfolk of Eletheros have had with the giants in the last century was Sif Einmyr I's negotiations with their ruling clan lords to establish a lasting mutual respect of peace between the two races.
