Water Material in Sands of Saraya | World Anvil

Water

Give a man water and he will live another day. Give water to a sorcerer, and he'll die of thirst looking for more.
Water is life, for without it, there is none. But water is also power, for only with it can one do magic. Water is the reason the world is the way it is, or more precisely, the sheer lack of it.

Properties

Physical & Chemical Properties

Besides the necessity of water for life, it is also the main source of fuel for a non-Wrahm sorcerer's magic. The exact energy provided for each molecule of water was very precisely calculated long ago, however most modern magicians are not classically trained and as such simply improvise and know the effects by intuition.

Geology & Geography

Long ago, water used to be most of everywhere, the sea, rain, lakes and rivers. As time went on, the rivers turned to streams, seas to saline fields, lakes to oasis. But now even those are mostly dried up. The salt-flats are huge plains of dehydrant salts, used for farming pods o' the soul, the oasis are dead and empty holes in the ground, and there is nary a sign of anywhere a river used to be.

Distribution

Trade & Market

Water is rarely traded in actual liquid form, rather most of it happens as the pods harvested from the salt flats, as it greatly increases its portability and safety from the sun's thirsty rays. They are transported via carts pulled by camels from the pod farmers to the villages and cities of the desert, and these trade-lines serve as the lifelines of Saraya.   The other way it is obtained is from animal blood, however it is not as efficient, and rather it is used as a way of recouping some of the water lost in raising the animal.

Law & Regulation

The farms and trade of this resource are very heavily guarded and maintained by the governments and organizations that control them, and it is very expensive for anyone to get more than their fair share. Known sorcerers are disallowed from any such access, and most prefer to leave them to die of thirst.
