Pod o' the Soul

A crop that grows in the salt flats around Saraya, their roots somehow going deep enough to extract water. Pod farmers make use of the 'coast' of sorts, where they can safely harvest the plants without falling prey to the dangerous salts. These farmers are well respected and very highly valued, as without their efforts civilisation would have fallen long ago. More ambitious, or suicidal, harvesters use stilts to manoeuvre themselves farther out, where one mistake can cost them their lives.   These pod like plants grow out of the salt plains with very deep, mottled brown roots, while their stem and head are of varying green. The plant as a whole resembles what in other worlds would be called a flower, but rather than blooming it remains a pod. This pod contains a small reserve of water, and thus when harvested in bulk can sustain the settlements of the deserts. When the head of this pod is cut by farmers or another creature, the plant simply grows another over the course of months. It does not do so on its own of course, for all things need sustenance. The farmers provide this by spreading carcasses, such as those of animals that are not edible, or people who passed. These are taken by the salts, which then provide the nutrients and water (from the blood) for the plant to take and filter out.   In the wild, this plant has evolved so and serves as a Skrays main water source, and often some other animals, such as Kreen or Bolt Bats, who then serve as the source of water for their own predators. This facilitates the plant to spread its seedlings far and wide thanks to animal dispersal. This makes the plant part of the soul of any living being within the land, and thus gives it its common name. It suffices to say that this plant is at the epicentre of life on the sands of Saraya
