The Runeweald
The Runeweald is a southern region of Astrakain which lies just west of the Rhun Karaz (Rune Mountains). This region is harsh and nearly uninhabitable. The temperature is below freezing at most times and receives only about 4 hours (10 am to 2 pm) of sunlight during the winter months. The only official settlement of the Runeweald is Ironlight, which isn't technically in Astrakain, but rather the northern edge of Daetus .
Geography
Bodies of Water
- Lac Avion De Glace: The largest lake in southern Astrakain. Often frozen year-round.
- Butcher's Basin: A large fjord west of the Troll Knuckle Hills
- Zhuf Zanen: A tributary that flows from Butcher's Basin to Lac Avion De Glace
- Zhuf Grimaz: A river that splits off from Zhuf Zanen and heads west
- Zhuf Wyr: A river that splits off from Zhu Zanen and heads south to Ironlight
- Zhuf Zank: A delta that comes down from the Rhun Karaz and flows through Drazh Moor into Lac Avion De Glace
Mountains
- Rhun Karaz: The Rune Mountains or Rune Spine. The southern section of the central mountain spine in Astrakain. Continues south and eventually becomes the Daetus Spine.
Forests
- Hissing Wood: A high altitude mountain forest
- Westgrave Wood: A woodland that stretches along the eastern coast of Lac Avion De Glace.
- Eastgrave Thicket: A woodland that stretches along the western edge of the Rhun Karaz. Many hunters head from Ironlight to Eastgrave Thicket in search of pelts. Many hunters don't come back hence the name.
- Drazh Moor: A dark arctic swamp
Hills & Valleys
- Moor's Pass: A clearing between the Westgrave Wood and Eastgrave Thicket that heads to Drazh Moor
- Troll Knuckle Hills: Rolling snowy hills just north of Ironlight
- Cairn Khazak-Gazan: A burial mound from an ancient war
- The Dead Glacier
Ecosystem
Near Ironlight the temperature in the summer fluctuates around -15 ℃ and 20 ℃. In the winter it is known to get as cold as -40 ℃. Snowfall is relentless any time of the year and blizzards are a frequent occurrence. Part of the reason there are no settlements in the Runeweald besides Ironlight is because there is no easy way of digging through the snowpack to build a proper foundation which results in the building being swept away during an artic storm. In the mountainous regions, avalanches are also a frequent occurrence.
