Session 3: The Black Sanctum Report

General Summary

Tuesday, October 17th, 1916 P.M.E. The Runeweald, Astrakain

  • The dungeon crawl continues...
  • Khagmadog found a secret door that leads to a magic cistern, its properties remain unknown, but Jordis filled his waterskin with the glowing transparent liquid.
  • Jordis determined that the five-handed clock-like thing above the portcullis was a combination lock. The twelve numbers on the "clock" were written in a strange script, Jordis cast comprehend languages to translate them. He spent a decent amount of time trying to guess the combination on the northwest portcullis of the undercroft (Goblin encounter room) but was unsuccessful.
  • Ezekial ventured to the southern halls of the sanctum and encountered a group of hobgoblins who were hunting the party.
  • The party managed to take one prisoner and interrogate him: he mentioned being hired by the shadow duke, refused the party's offers of payment since they wouldn't give him his rate in platinum, and said that he was ready to accept the frostmaiden's call. The party then killed him.
  • The party then headed to the eastern halls and found a chantry dedicated to a man named Edhror. The sarcophagus had "Edhror lies here, his true potential only recognized in the crucible of death" inscribed on it. Jordis cast comprehend languages to translate the text but is unaware of what language it was written in. It was noted that the script that appeared on the sarcophagus was different from the script that appeared on the clock.
  • Mores cracked open the sarcophagus and revealed a humanoid skeleton with tiny horns and clawed hands/feet.
  • Upon leaving the chantry the party found Kelemor alongside two miners, Thorsten and Hildur. The group was battered and bloodied, sneaking in the shadows of the dark halls. Kelemor mentioned that they were pursued by a band of Hobgoblins but managed to blockade themselves in a room full of kobold corpses and giant rats. He also mentioned there were 8 of them originally but many succumbed to the rats.
  • The party send Ori & Roro to escort the group out of the mines and wait while they clear out the rest of the underground complex. Lord Oromm Gurnisson stays with the party.
  • The party finds the room full of rats and viscera and closes the door leaving the giant vermin to feed.
  • The last room in the south hall was incredibly cold and the ground was frozen. At the end of the pillared hall was an altar to an unknown patron. On the altar, there was a broken dagger and a set of five numbers written in blood.
  • Jordis aligned the five hands of the clock above the northwest portcullis in order with the numbers found in the altar room which unlocked the gate.
  • Through the portcullis was a room full of randomly placed verticle metal rods. The ceiling had a very bizarre mural painted on it. In the center of the room was a freshly dead man who was steaming. All of the rods had a noticeable patina.
  • Khagmadog walked through the northwest archway of this room and immediately a deafening crack of thunder echoed through the halls. The party found a ladder in this room and on the north wall of this room the following was crudely etched into the stone: "Lightning comes before thunder".
  • Jordis and Ezekial went down the Northeast archway and found a jammed door. Jordis body slammed the door and as he burst into the room he slipped on an oily ramped surface which fell into a pit of wooden spikes. Jordis managed to escape death by the skin of his teeth and the rest of the party came to help rescue him (and secure the chest that rests above the pit on a solitary platform). Both missions were successful. Ezekial smashed the chest open with a handaxe and found 250 GP.
