The Front

Before the war, the world was covered with a sprawling and modern civilization, led by the wisest and most powerful of wizards, the same wizards who would bring about the end of the world. Many of these wizards had wards and enchantments that would prevent their deaths, but in the face of such powerful destructive magic, these spells were only partially effective. Now mangled and twisted, these former wizards now roam the wasted lands they once ruled as undead skull lords, leading legions of their former citizens, continuing to fight the war that has since ended. When the spells descended on civilization from the sky, the cities of dwarves, drow, other dwellers of the deeps were protected from the initial devastation. Now those cities that stood closest to the surface are battlefields, the last remnants of the living holding off the endless waves of the dead and the mutated, protecting the entrances to the relative safety below.
