The Deep Lines

A once successful dwarven venture to connect the various cities of the world with efficient mechanical transport through the Underdark; these tunnels, railways and way stations are responsible for the majority of remaining humans and other non-dwarf races, who were in transit when the spells hit.   Some of the stations or indeed, even some of the trams themselves in the Deep Lines serve as small merchant towns in the Underdark, trading the supplies of one group of travelers for the supplies of another. It's not true civilization, but it's as close as many get in their long treks through the black tunnels.   Of particular note is that magic is not welcome in the Deep Lines. It was magic that destroyed the world, and the gods who abandoned it. Most Conductors subscribe to the teaching of the Inventor, a dwarf who proposes a safer world through science. The Inventor's patented Anti-Magic Field Generator is standard equipment aboard any Deep Line Tram. This is important, as the humans survivors in the tunnels are now roughly 50% wild magic sorcerers, due to the brief time their ancestors spent on the imagiated surface before making it to one of the entrances to the Deep Lines. Dwarves who follow The Inventor consider sorcery a treatable disease, and wizardry is grounds to be tried as a war criminal.

The Deep Lines extend far across the forgotten regions. Sometimes they consist only of Dwarven mined tunnels, sometimes they pierce through ancient caverns. Sometimes they even punch through the ruins of dugneons and ruins long abandoned. At the hight of their power, the Dwarves boasted they could build a railway through any obstacle or territory and keep it safe through force of arms. A mistake long regretted.
