The Nightlands

The destructive astral radiation that leaks, and sometimes pours, from the Rift has to go somewhere, and that somewhere is called: The Nightlands. Directly underneath the Rift and surrounded by a barrier of swirling metallic sand, the Nightlands is a contained hellscape of alien proportions.

Geography

The surface of the Nightlands is charred black by violent radiation storms that periodically spew out from the Rift above. The ground is littered with broken spaceships, buildings, and corpses of creatures that were sent through the Astral Plane. Underneath the surface is a complex network of caves where most of the sapient species hide out, only leaving when needed.   The air has thinned so much from the radiation that the stars are always visible, making it seem as if it always night, hence the name. Not only is this air thin but also generally toxic. The alien beings from the Astral Plane have no trouble with this lack of clean air, but most creatures native to the Material Plane need to supplement themselves with extra air when heading up to the surface. Because of this few species can survive from the Material Plane in the Nightlands, save those smart enough and adapted to the harsh environment.   Every few hours, the Rift pulses in an attempt to expand, in an event called a Rift Storm. These events last around half an hour and cause great waves of astral radiation to blast the surface. They also distort the local Material Plane causing gravity within the Nightlands to temporarily act sporadically, and in bizarre directions most of the time pulling anything loose up to the sky toward the Rift.   The boarders to the Nightlands are harsh sandstorms created by the World Walkers in an attempt to contain the radiation. The sand is made up from the crushed and ground up hulls of star ships that have been knocked around by the Rift Storms. The boarder is around 2 kilometers thick, and extending all the way up to the stratosphere.   The Nightlands is shaped in a perfect circle with a 200 kilometer radius.

Fauna & Flora

All of the wild lifeforms in the Nightlands are Astral in nature.   In terms of flora there ware alien plants that look black and wilted, blending in perfectly with the landscape. When the Rift Storms hit they transform extending incandescent multicolored leaves that devour Astral radiation.   In terms of wild fauna there is a range of strange but familiar creatures, such as gravity seals or sail whales, to absolutely alien beings, such as writhing masses of tendrils or living geometric shapes.   The intelligent life is split into 6 general groups:   The nightlands vamkala, astroci, and keneci generally work well with one another in many tribes spanning the Nightlands surface and caves. On occasion one of the insectids of The Mad Hive will break their mind free from the hive and live among these tribes, often with some dismay from the tribe members. Dracos generally form homogeneous tribes as opposed to mixed tribes like the other species.   All of the tribes are united under the Council of Night Tribes, which helps to maintain some peace and stability among the various tribes.   The World Walkers Outpost is populated with various species of sapient life, but they rarely if ever directly interact with the other species seeing that their outpost floats in the stratosphere.
