Insectid

Deep in the depths live the psionic insects in hives of millions sharing one mind: the insectids.

Basic Information

Anatomy

External

Externally speaking insectids are naturally roughly humanoid shaped, but far shorter and baring an extra set of arms in the middle of their torsos.   They usually stand between 100 and 120 cm with an exoskeleton of gray chitin plates. Thier torsos are shockingly thin in the abdomen and widen out in the chest to acomedate for their extra arms. At the end of their segmented limbs are three pronged claws. Their bodies are often light, around 20-25 kg, but that can be deciptive due to their unique internal anatomy detailed below.   Their heads are disproportionally large, with large compound eyes. The eyes emit a light that appears as a dull white and into the range of ultraviolet light, this glow and their great low light vision allows them to see atleast somewhat in total darkness. Above their eyes are antenne they use to hear as well as amplifying their ability to recive psionic signals. They have insectile mouths and no human-like vocal cords, but their innate psionic abilities allow them to vibrate air and shape what come out of their mouths to sound like human vocalizations but it still has a buzzing distortion, but they prefer to speak telepathically.    Their natural form is far from their only form when part of a hive. Due to their psionicly reactive DNA and insectid can have almost all of its body parts modified, often to suit their environment or adapt to preforming a specific role in the hive. Once the DNA is modified, the insectid will eat enough to reconfigure its body, then form a chrysalis from oral secretions, and spend anywhere from from a few hours to a few weeks before it emerges anew. Alternativly the process can be instantaneous by way of a psionic technique, however the technique is liable to fry the mind of the insectid, requiring a second insectid to psionicly pilot the brain dead insectid's body. The knowledge of how to modify the DNA is a closely guarded secret of the hives, so many of those abandoned or exiled by their hives are permenantly in what ever form their hive had formed them in.
