Grand Duke Tapani V
Grand Duke Tapani Ilkitala (a.k.a. Tapani V)
Upon the death of Tapani's elder brother, Grand Duke Armas II, the late monarch's young son Joonas would be next in line for the title of Grand Duke at the age of just six years old. Tapani who at the time was lord of Huhtika Castle in the province of Sarntweir, offered to step in as guardian for his young nephew, often taking a key role in teaching young Joonas in arts of warfare and gentle etiquette while his mother led the regency council till he came of sufficient age. Tapani thought of Joonas like a son and their relationship was a very close one much to the irritation of the queen regent who had her misgivings of Tapani and his apparent assumption of the fatherly role. Joonas would die after only five years as Grand Duke, dying in a hunting accident after being thrown from his horse. Tapani was devastated by Joonas's death and spent much time in solitude in the following days, though he was the nearest male relative, he would not officially assume the title of Grand Duke himself until two weeks later when Samu Laspura, Surcount of Sjolund, and Artur Kappeli, Surcount of Rydant, arrived to personally confer the title onto him at the behest of the regency council which had been abandoned by Joonas' grieving mother. She was said to be inconsolable and blamed Tapani wholly for her son's death. In an almost unprecedented turn of events, she publicly denounced Tapani and swore that he may never set foot in Canyndor till her son had been avenged. Strangely, perhaps out of empathy, Tapani would spend the next three years ruling as Grand Duke from the city of Anttula, Canyndor was largely administered by his Grand Marshal, Edvard Janne, Surcount of Ingus, as Joonas's mother had largely resigned from public life. She would eventually leave Canyndor and spend her last years living with her sister in the province of Anttegra, Tapani would finally take up residence in Canyndor and even named his first son Joonas.
