Drake Character in Renedge | World Anvil

Drake

Drake

Drake is a ghostwalker, a "man of mystery" with unusual powers. He is magical enough to helm a spelljammer, but it’s dangerous if he does it for too long. He is cleared for knowing about Corruption.   In battle, Drake is primarily a great weapon fighter. It's a simple and straightforward role, but with his skill, it is also a highly effective one.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Drake is a tall, stocky, imposing giant of a man. His bearing and build are such that he looks like a knight even in civilian clothes. He looks like he's in his early 20s, but he's actually very old.   Drake looks human but has been implied to be something else, though he is unsure exactly what. After finding out that his old second in command looked like a marilith, he was told "You're not a demon, but you and your old army are the templates of their form." What this means for Drake is unknown.

Special abilities

Drake's superpower is "the ability to be where he is needed". He has a sort of dimensional transportation ability that, when activated, pulls him into an alternate dimension or space between dimensions that he calls "the grey". He can then pass back into Renedge or into another world or reality.   At present, Drake isn't capable of choosing the precise location where he lands upon return. He'll simply appear wherever he is most needed at a given time. In addition to the obvious benefits, this helps his mental state, as he never has to worry that there's somewhere else where he'd be doing more good.   This has had the effect of making Drake something of a bad omen among people in the know: If he appears, something bad is coming up, because he needs to be there for it to be resolved. His inability to aim is also the reason it's dangerous for him to helm a spelljammer for too long; if he has to teleport while doing so, he'll be okay wherever he ends up, but the inhabitants and crew (and possibly the boat itself) might be less fortunate.   Drake is trying to practice and get better control of his power, but with him finding a new crisis that needs facing every time he uses the ability, it's understandably slow going.

Apparel & Accessories

While working, Drake wears full plate armor and carries a magic greatsword.

Specialized Equipment

Drake's sword is inhabited by the soul of his wife. She is conscious, but she is only able to communicate with Drake for an hour a day.

Personal history

Drake's first memory is waking up in the middle of a field, watching a drake fly past overhead. It was not long before his subsequent wandering saw him meet the woman who would become his wife, who saw something good beneath his dark countenance and took him in. He took the name of his first sight as his own.   Some time in the past, Drake was a dark general for the forces of evil, but he lost his memories of all of that. His wife slowly taught him how to be better, how to be a good person even when he felt like he was or should be a villain. Tragic events since have seen her bound as the spirit of the blade Drake now carries, but while it isn't the same, at least as long as Drake keeps the blade in his possession they will always be together.   Since his amnesia and recovery, Drake has heard some stories about his old self from people who knew him or knew about him. He hasn't liked what he's heard. As far as he's concerned, though, that man is dead, and he'll stay dead if Drake has anything to say about it.
"That man no longer exists." - Drake, on his pre-amnesia self
At one point, Drake met "himself" on a planet and in a place that either doesn't exist or had already died. The encounter was strange: The other "Drake" was the mage to Drake's warrior, and while the details are unclear, Drake believes he has started a fight to the death with other versions of himself over his original sword. Drake seeks to destroy the sword, while the others likely aim to take it and claim Drake's old role as a dark general.   In 23 ARL, Drake provided the trump card that let Pele Firewing know her mom was alive.

Employment

In addition to his freelance adventuring, Drake works security at the Blink Dog Inn in southwestern Radaghast in exchange for an apartment there.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Drake works for the owner of the Blink Dog Inn, a "charming creampuff of a woman" named Felicity. She had a spare apartment and she rarely gets any customers, so Drake offered to make sure no one ever causes problems in her establishment if she lets him live there.   Drake is friends and roommates with a being called Nox, "The Cat Lord". Nox is really into helping people, but he's not great with interpersonal skills or explaining what he's doing. He means well, though.

Speech

Drake likes using older or sophisticated language. He tends to sound like an old knight, no matter what he's doing.
