The Hinterlands

"This land is unlike anything I have ever seen. Everything has an aura of danger, from the trees to the smallest animal. This place sets my teeth on edge, but I cannot bring myself to leave." - first entry, field notes of Berthold Twill

The Hinterlands is a landmass that runs right up to the western edge of Midgard's main continent. This is a land of untamed wilderness, ancient and indecipherable ruins, and dangerous creatures that would otherwise not exist here on Midgard. The expeditions that have entered the Hinterlands over the centuries have each returned with a wealth of information and artifacts that have allowed scholars to begin painting a better picture of these mysterious western lands.

The explorers and archaeologist that have ventured into the Hinterlands and returned, all tell similar tales of a land that holds you tightly in its mysterious grasp, pulling you deeper and deeper into the Unknown, and only those with a strong enough will are able to turn away and make it back. Many have conjectured that these lands have a magical allure to them, and only when you have broken its hold over you may you leave.

Natural Resources

The Hinterlands are a vast land of mostly unexplored wilderness, brimming with resources. Vast woodlands blanket the lands, towering mountains that scrape the skies lay filled with rare minerals, and the hills and waters are alive with game. At first glance, the Hinterlands may appear to be an abundant paradise, but therein lies its danger. These lands are also home to monsters, ancient magics, and many things better left forgotten.

History

The history of the Hinterlands is shrouded in legends and hearsay, making it almost impossible to find any concrete information on the lands within and their origins. However, one thing does remain constant throughout every one of the texts that have been uncovered from before the Great Cataclysm, there wasn't a single mention of the Hinterlands until centuries after civilization began to recover. The distinct lack of information regarding the landmass has prompted many expeditions to be funded and sent out over the years, to attempt to map the lands and uncover what mysteries they can.

Tourism

The only tourism into the Hinterlands comes in the form of the occasional traveling merchant, desperate to acquire rare new items, or on rarer occasions, an exploratory expedition attempting to venture deep into the Unknown.
