The Sea of Dread

The wild waters of the south

Ah, but it is just a name. There is nothing dreadful about that sea. Full of fish it is. Not to mention the islands inhabited by lovely women and their glorious... um, fruit. Oh sure there are stories about sea serpents and pirates, but what great ocean is not going to have those problems. No, the name comes from ancient times, before the great cataclysm they say. Something happened out there, something bad. But these days, it isn't any different from the waters around Ejo. Hell, I think the Sea of Dread is safer. So don't mind the name, my boys are ready to sail when you are, as long as the coin is good.

Geography

Stretching south from the continent of Reluria and engulfing many of the small island dotting the waters, the Sea of Dread is vast and deep. It technically stretches to the coasts of Ejo, but there is some dispute about the waters to the north of the jungle continent being part of the Jade Sea mentioned in antiquity.

Fauna & Flora

Most of the plants and animals in the Sea of Dread are those found in typical tropical biomes.

History

Before the cataclysm the Sea of Dread had another name, Okeanos Tromos by the Tyrian Empire, but even that has a grim connotation. Little information remains about the dark events that gave the sea its name, except for the simple fact that The Accursed Island obtained it's name around the same time.   The Tyrian empire ruled the sea with their impressive navy and established control of many of the islands within it. Ruins of their strongholds remain on many of the islands. The island Confederation of Ithan was created before the cataclysm and remains to this day, and has gained power since the cataclysm.

Tourism

Most travel in the Sea of Dread comes from commercial interests. But the Confederation of Ithan has opened many of its islands to tourism and vacations.

Maps

  • Beyond the Veil
This map was painted by Enna Dalathan based on the image found in the Chapel in the town of Priamos. The only text was an ornate compass rose with the Elvish letter for north. Symbols on the map are included, but there was no obvious description of what they meant. Enna hoped the sea monster imagery was just an artistic flourish.
