Merchant District

Industry & Trade

This is the major trade hub of The Grand Duchy of Kadmos. Not only are all the major shops located here, but most of the trade offices have some kind of representation here. The Grand Market in the middle of the District is where most of the locals do their shopping, but it also draws plenty of crowds of visitors to the city.    This district is also home to the major inns, taverns and brothels in the city, especially catering to the sailors on the eastern side of the district (closer to the docks).

Infrastructure

This is the center of Mystemere, lying directly to the west of the Mirror Bay and the docks. It is south of the North End and The Spice Market. It is north of the Old Quarter and a portion of Bricktop. To the west is the hill and the Duke's Palace. All the main roads in the city lead to the Merchant District and most traveler's find themselves in the heart of the city.

Guilds and Factions

There are no official trade guilds in the Duchy, but the local merchants try to respect each other to keep the coin flowing. Healthy competition is respected, and there are clear lines drawn between the goods here and those in the Spice Market.    Trade guilds from other lands, such as the island Confederation of Ithan do have representatives here, as do the Five Shires and their commerce quorum.

Tourism

This area is the most popular area for tourists visiting the city. The shops are plentiful and varied, offering just about anything one could want in the Duchy. Many travelers seek out special Dorian crafts and goods that can only be found in the Duchy.    Most popular are the various inns, taverns, public houses and brothels that are plentiful in this area. Entertainers of all stripes can be found here, especially in the Grand Market near the Bricktop. Those seeking more exotic goods are sent to the Spice Market. Fortune tellers and sooth sayers can be found in the Old Quarter.   The Market District is almost always bustling with activity, and even as night falls, the various public houses and inns are open for business and lively.    The area is frequented by city guards, but the densely packed streets and crowd bustle make this a prime area for pickpockets. Also scam artists and grifters frequent the area to fleece visitors out of coin. It is not a dangerous place, even at night, but the unwary could find their purse cut if they aren't careful.

Architecture

This is an older part of the city, but has seen some renovations as the Duke tries to bring the old Dorian buildings up to Theosian standards. As such many of the narrow and peaked roofs of Dorian design are mixed among the sturdier and more solid Theosian constructions. Most shop owners use colorful fabrics, awnings and signs to distract from the mismatched looks of the area, and most tourists don't even notice. The closer one gets to the Bricktop, the more Theosian the buildings become.
