Fyryàn-Glys, Vaevyàn-Ablà Spell in Qal'ath | World Anvil

Fyryàn-Glys, Vaevyàn-Ablà ([fIrI:a:n:gli:s:vi:vjen:æbla:])

Fyryàn-Glys, Vaevyàn-Ablà is a complex incantation devised to address major incidents, which shall be detailed below. If you are a lone Mage, be warned that this particular spell requires at least three Elemental Mages and, if used in certain situations, two or three supporting Mages. As it is an Emergency Incantation that likely affected all Elements of Nature (both in the cause of the emergency and the remedy provided), the entire the Crystal Circle or the Guardian Mages of the Elemental Crystals should the Circle, for whatever reason, be disbanded.   The simple principle which has ever governed those Myst Sensitive enough to wield Elemental spellcraft will apply even more than usual in this case:
The ability to speak out an incantation does not grant the desired outcome alone. Sufficient Crystals or Shards will never make up a deficit of knowledge and experience that fellow Mages can provide.

Which Situations Called for this Spell?

In short, out of control, fire-driven natural or intentionally-started disasters or threats that are beyond the power of the Guardian of Fyr to balance. Some examples would be:
  • Fire Rush: either magically instigated, from a natural source (such as a Dragon) or a forest wildfire.
  • Melted Rock: or "lava" as the Elelupii alchemists now call it.
  • Land-Crack Flow: where the Erdé beneath our feet splits open, revealing the layers of our Orb that usually remain hidden.
But this list is non-exhaustive.

Translation

As this is a Qalathii/Foyii incantation, it is derived from Foyiitùn:
  • Fyr(ii) - flames
  • Y - here (or there)
  • an - of, to, on the
  • Glys - ice
  • Vi(à) -A way (to)
  • Aevy(t)en - wind/air (depending on the presence of the (t)
  • a - to
  • blà - pure, white, snowy
Letters dropped to conform to Language Smoothing rules are denoted by brackets ().   It is difficult therefore to literally translate this, though you can see the meaning. The approximate Common Tongue/Parànti translation of
Fyryàn-Glys, Vaevyàn-Ablà
would be:
Change those flames into ice, may the wind make a way for purification.

Ice Creation

Ice is not one of the six recognised Elements. Therefore it must be invoked. While natural ice requires Water, the presence of the Guardian Mage of Ousii need not be present, for Wind (Aevyten) has its own chilling effect.

Guardians Required

  1. Fyr
  2. Aevyen
  3. And one other: see below.
These are referred to as "Primary Mages" in the remainder of this document.

Protection

Depending on the situation being addressed, the Guardian Mages above may need protecting with one of the following three basic incantations:
Kylàn-Erdormà
Which required Orma and Erdé to create a "rock and light bubble" or dome.
Ethkàsz-àny-mystii
Which required Ethkiel and Erdé and/or Orma and rendered the Primary Mages invisible.
Ethkousii, Kaszàn-y-Mystii
requiring Ethkiel and Ous(ii) and surrounded the primary Mages with mist.

Remaining Mages

Any Elemental Mages not required for the protection must join the Primary Mages. The simplest solution is Ous(ii) as it leaves maximum flexibility for protection options. Depending on the situation, however, the Mages must quickly come to a consensus to allow the remaining Mages to join the Primary ones.

Effect

To surround the source of fire and heat with arcane ice to prevent further damage to Nature and/or people. With sufficient focus, the source of the pending disaster may also be stopped.   e.g. Land-cracks cooled at a significant depth, a fire-brand rendered harmless, or a Dragon's ability to produce heat flames stopped (for a time).

Beauty in Emergency

As an aside, the initial effect of the incantation actually creates a beautiful spectacle as the fire is literally encased in arcane ice. For a time (which will vary wildly from situation to situation) both Elements exist, meaning flames retain their colour and animation, while the ice shifts with its movements.

Side/Secondary Effects

The air around the target will become chilled. This itself will require rebalancing in order not to disrupt other Elements and creatures of Nature that abide there. The Primary Mages should therefore ensure sufficient mental reserves are kept for dealing with the aftermath.

Manifestation

The unique colours of the Primary Mages' Crystals will at first issue forth as a wisp of smoke before joining together with one, semi-translucent, white ribbon-like appearance. Spurred by the wind and the will of the Primary Mages, it will wrap itself around the target, stretching itself until the target is fully contained (assuming complete success, naturally). As it does, it also solidifies before becoming like natural ice.   Some records of past "Fire Containments" report "white lightning" within the wisps mentioned. This can occur if the guardian of Ethkiel is present with the Primary Mages, as extra cold from above the clouds is drawn upon, resulting in a sort of "micro storm".

Source

As mentioned, the ideal scenario is that the primary Elemental Crystals are used. That said, this invocation can be utilised for smaller scale fires, where a society may be Myst Sensitive but have no one person assigned to protecting the people from flames, nor providing them. In this instance, Elemental Shards may be sufficient, depending on the size of the threat being repulsed.   In dire need Myst Sensitive Mages may draw upon their core Elemental connection in the absence of a Crystal or Shard.

Warning Notes

These are advistory notes formulated by the Crystal Circle for other cultures (predominantly the Wild Folk):
  • Even small-scale use of Fyryàn-Glys, Vaevyàn-Ablà exacts a price from either the other Elements or yourself. Do not forget these require rebalancing.
  • Use of incantations should be only employed if other methods are ineffective (such as water, or stifling the fire).
  • If you are the only Mage, then put your energy into alternative methods rather than directing your power at the source. A lone Mage has no cross-checks, nor another who can catch you if you fall. You may use spellcraft as part of "other methods" - enhancing the effects of water or using wind from multiple directions to prevent its spread for example.
  • Immediately call for help to assist in rebalancing the Elements. The Mìsii may seem to be hiding, but many are in the Realm and they are always on the lookout for people requiring aid, even if they have their own mission at the time.
  • If this incantation is cast with no Crystal or Shard, the Mage must in every instance rest immediately after the emergency. This rest may require at least a day, if not two and no further spellcasting must be used. If the Myst Sensitive individual has identified their primary (and ideally a secondary) Element, then they must seek out a natural source of those Elements as the location for their rest. If this precaution is not taken, the Mage risks Elemental Essence Degradation.

Material Components
As this incantation draws on nearly all of the Elements, the best source of such energy is the Crystal Circle's primary Elemental Crystals. A weaker version may be invoked using Elemental Shards, which will lessen the effect, but may be enough to avert a complete disaster.

Effect Duration
Permanent, or until the Cold has Absorbed the Heat.
Effect Casting Time
3-5 Seconds to Cast. However, focus must remain for the time required to contain the source of the flames.
Level
Master, ideally Guardian Mage.
Applied Restriction
This incantation should not be cast from within a fire, either when literally surrounded by flames or, say, from within a volcano. To do so risks encasing the Mage(s) and their Crystal(s) in their own Ice. While the Crystals would survive, it is thought the Mages would not - either through being absorbed by the Ice or through natural causes such as suffocation.   Risk Mitigation This risk may be lessened, and potentially mitigated if the supporting Mages utilise
Kylàn-Erdormà
as their strategy.
