Chaos Guardians Military Formation in Project Chaos | World Anvil

Chaos Guardians

Did you feel it? When we walked by them. I'm still shivering.   Their magical auras, they...they practically radiate magical power without even moving so much their eyes. Their magical auras seeping into me so easily, like they're telling me I'm nothing to them. Incredible and fear invoking at the same time. To think...not even your dad has one.   But then again, these are the guys that protect royalty and hunt demon champions for sport. I feel so insignificant just being in the same building as them.   You think we can ever be as powerful as them Amanda?
—Naomi Zaliin to Amanda Saleos upon seeing two Chaos Guardians

Among those in the Ol'viilun and Duriin'miin, there are those that have spent countless years in servitude, bearing the heraldry of their house with greatest honors, and protected their Noble House from even the greatest threats. These are the veterans, the most skilled, and the most powerful of all servants. Highly looked up to from all other servants and what most others could only achieve in their wildest dreams. Guardians of those who wield the highest powers in the Realm of Chaos, of Infernus: the chaos guardians.

Guardians of the Chaos

Even among the upper echelons of the Duriin'miin, there stands out one servant above all; the Chaos Guardian. These servants are those that have spent countless years in servitude, surviving even the nastiest demons in the wild, protecting their House from extreme dangers, and showing commandeering skills that can even put some Lords to shame. And lastly, and most notably, servants wielding power that rivals even Demon Captains.   Chaos guardian is not a rank that is easily achieved. Most high ranking servants will end their careers as a Chaos Knight, a title that can be given by any headmasters of a Noble House. Chaos guardian is a rank that is only given by a royal figure i.e., kings, queens, and high kings and queens. Chaos guardians rarely serve any person under royalty, as being given the rank is the highest honor any servant in any Duriin'miin can achieve.   A personal invitation to become a servant under a royal figure is more than likely the outcome upon being given the rank. Any servant with any sense will take the invitation, as becoming a servant to royalty comes with the greatest benefits any job in Infernus could ever offer. Most who become chaos guardians, however, would have already been under servitude under royalty thus making the invitation an easy acceptance. For those offered the rank that are not already under servitude to a royal figure, the decision to become a guardian becomes more difficult. Most chaos knights dedicate years of service to their lords or ladies, developing deep loyalties. Many can even find themselves taking months to decide, weighing their loyalty versus the chance for the greatest honor any servant could behold.   Either way, just receiving the opportunity for the rank, whether accepted or rejected, is already something most servants will never achieve.

Duties of the Guardians

Aside from their greatest task of being under the direct command and defense of a royal figure, chaos guardians also perform dangerous missions given to them by their master. These missions are always of the highest rank, fenuniil, literally meaning life-threatening (on the Ruviil Mission Sliding Scale these are IX and X ranked). Being that they are the most elite servants, the duties of the most dangerous and complex missions are given to them. Such missions can involve the busting of organized crime in their domain, or hunt down high ranking demons and devils.   In every-day life, when not on missions, chaos guardians personally guard wherever their master may be. Sometimes this may be the door to their master's office or at other times besides them when they are out. They are also especially reactive to any slightest hint of danger and take any threat to their master seriously.   Due to the nature of who they protect, chaos guardians must always remain polished, never letting their skills in combat ever to show a flake of rust. Except on Sundays, chaos guardians train for a minimum of 2 hours every day, whether physically or mentally.

Power of the Guardians

Although there are no official criteria in terms of power to become a guardian, most of them exhibit the capability of exhibiting high ranking spells. Those belonging to the Elemental Pillar of Magic can perform spells of Class VI power (spells capable of destroying towns and cities). Those belonging to the Mental and Spiritual Pillars of Magic can perform spells of Moderate Intricacy. Because they can perform high-level spells, chaos guardians also have massive mana pools. These pools can grow to such a size they can "leak" in the form of a secondary magical aura, which can be reabsorbed by other mages close enough, and felt by Spiritualists.   Chaos guardians, when they have nothing better to do, and when they are allowed leave from their duties, go demon hunting for sport. Among the chaos guardians is a small, but secret order dedicated to demon hunting. These servants, however, don't hunt just any demons. Any chaos knight or high servant can take down lesser and wight demon with ease in the eyes of a chaos guardian. They want something more challenging, something worthy of challenging their power. To do so, they seek out the demons that no other servant or mage dare even think of encountering.   It's uncommon for chaos guardians to hunt down scourge demons, for even these demons are deemed as "weaklings." The preferred demon for these servants is nothing less than a greater demon. If a chaos guardian is feeling even more daring, they'll seek out a demon of sin. For the big game hunter, however, and for bragging rights among their peers, chaos guardians will even hunt demon champions. And it isn't a rarity for the chaos guardian to come back with a token of his kill...or brag about it on social media.

Famous Guardians

Kanenori Yoshida

Imir, A forgotten family's rebirth by Benjamin Goutte
One of the most famous of the chaos guardians was one who wasn't even a devil; a mortal from Japan, Kanenori Yoshida, master in both the Elemental and Spiritual Pillars of magic. Kanenori was one of four chaos guardians under High King Avernus X (ruled from mortal years 1778 CE - 1906 CE).   Kanenori was the High King's left-hand man. With a confirmed kill of 102 champion demons and 7 demon captains, Kanenori was the High King's best servant and even considered to be one of the best Guardians of all time. However, Kanenori went missing in the mortal year 1889 after he failed to return on a hunt for his 8th demon captain kill. Kanenori's body was never found, and to date, still presumed to have been killed and eaten by a powerful and unknown demon.

Nakiil Rulmulii

2 by ValeryNeith
A master in both the Mental and Spiritual Pillars of Magic, Nakiil is one of 3 chaos guardians in servitude to High King Avernus XII (ruling from mortal years 1975 CE - Present).   Nakiil is capable of performing one of the most difficult spells in the Mental Pillar: Mental Arts, Mass Telepathy. His signature spell Murder of 100 Manubis, a powerful combination of mental and spiritual magics, is capable of using illusory hands to trick his victims into believing they are suffocating.
