Galar's Disease Condition in Pondera | World Anvil

Galar's Disease

More commonly known as magic sensitivity, Galar's disease is known mostly for the effects of magic upon the individual. Those who are afflicted by Glaars disease are sickened by any magic cast upon them, even with attempts to remove the disease itself, which has always proven unfruitful.

Transmission & Vectors

It is currently unknown how someone is born with Galar's disease, however, it is believed to be a genetic anomaly, as those who have it also potentially grant it to their children. In cases where parents do not have the disease, Galar's only appears in magical societies. In fact, not only are children with magical based parents more likely to have Galar's disease, but those with very powerful magic ancestry are even more likely to suffer from the disease.
However, reports do conflict with one another as far as who is most likely to gain the disease. In several cases, Galars disease has been known to appear to students of magic soon after graduating from their classes, preventing them from using magic upon themselves. In fact, in one example, a priest had gone their life without being afflicted by Galar's disease, and died from the illness they recived from a simple Cure spell.

History

When the world was young, and Venichis had introduced magic into the hands of mortals from his own, demons conspired against the sight of power being taught to mortal kind.
Those that conspired, brought themselves to the attention of Galar, a student who was more than willing to learn the ways of magic, but could not grasp it upon himself. The demons themselves spoke whispers of corrupton to the man, corrupting his spirit until he himself loathed his inability to use magic. It was through his anger that he started to destroy the spellbooks of wizards whenever he could. It was through this destruction, that Galar was caught, and executed.
The story of Galar did not end there however. Galars spirit, corrupted as it was, was confused for that of a demon by Tempri Ino, and was cast into The Abyssal Realms. His spirit fought for his right to exist and gradually became a true demon, powerful enough to remove magic from any foe. Galar kept his name however, and set forth into the world a true parasite of his malicious intent, a disease of the body that causes great sickness in those afflicted by magic.

The origins of this disease are all but lost to history, but from the scraps that have been picked up with communion from the divine and their teachings, this is the most closely held beleif of all religions within Pondera as to how Galar's Disease came about. It has known to appear as a very rare case, usually passed down in magical households, but can appear at random in any species.
It does appear however that those with Psionic abilities, under the guardianship of Desmos in The Psi-Fields. After three generations of living within the Psi Fields, a child was born that was extremly sickly, and also held the prowess of psionic power from his family line. Even with all the tools and abilities of the psions within the realm, the child would not heal.
The child remained sickly, but grew to accept his sickness, and it tainted the fiber of his being as he did so. By the time he had become a teenager, his powers had grown immensly, rivling even a fully grown adult in power, though he refused to use his powers whatsoever. It was when he reached 13 that he lost control, and entire buildings were lost in the chaos brought forth by the child, beore Desmos himself came forward and put to rest the sickly one.
It was from this incident that the parents of the child were forbidden to make another, should they have been the cause, and that any child, sickly from birth to three years within his realm would be delt with swiftly and mercifully. This was an unpopular decision within The Psi-Fields, but was accepted for its potential to save its residents.
