Public Execution and Display

Although most of the nations in the central continent of Gruthe do continue to practice state sanctioned execution, most have shifted away from the most brutalized forms and then the ritualized displaying of the bodies as warning to others. However, at various times in its long history the Qh'énnshaiyn realm has seen exceedingly violent purges against minority peoples and religious heretics where the ritualized display was the point of the exercise. These purges called Thtetū in Qh'énnish, were particularly dark points in the history of the region and a moral blight on the Cult of Gh'en and its knighthood, the Ghestenyi.   However, in times of great trial—such as the numerous wars with the hated Ptarshakkian Empire—the brutal side of Qh'énnish culture would resurface. In ancient Qhélssénnish culture, violent brutality, was considered natural and part of the cyclical renewal of the world. In the descendant Qh'énnish culture this view still lingers in the zeitgeist and uncertainty invariably brings with it a reaction towards conservative, retrogressive, and the Old Ways.   Human sacrifice was outlawed by the Callessai and it remained so after the collapse of their empire and the Qh'énnish control of the entire peninsula. Pockets of ancient practices continued well into the Baronial Period of Qh'énnish society. And when this too was purged from Qh'énnshaiyn, conservative elements considered ritualized execution an acceptable alternative, provided the condemned was to suffer and their remains displayed.
