The Qh'énns (qʰĕn:)

Written by Caestus

Originally known as the Qhélssénns, the Qh'énns are a northern people. Their ultimate origination is unclear, though they seem related to the Kielik of the Far West. It is believed the the Kharnnish people were once a tribe of Qhélssénnish peoples; the Kharnnes take the position that their ancient ancestors expelled a group from their tribe who then went on to become the Qhélssénns.   The adjectival form is Qh'énnish; derived terms: Qh'énnsman, Qh'énnswoman, Qh'énnfolk. Their language is called Qh'énnish.   Typical Qh'énnish features include, pale or fair complexion, tall and broad bodies, black hair, blue eyes. Men are hirsute and larger and broader than their women, though in comparison to other races, Qh'énnish women are more often taller and larger.

Naming Traditions

Feminine names

Many Qh'énnish names for women and girls are feminized masculine names by adding vowels or feminine affixes. Rare but increasingly common over time, and particularly among the Qh'énns among the Xell Exiles, the affix qā- "daughter of" is used in name formation. Often this manifests as "qā-(father's name)"; in the case of prominent or significant mother, her name would be used instead.

Unisex names

Both affixes dā- and qā- can be attached to a cross gender name for unisex names.

Family names

Family names are often a combination of regionalisms, professions, and patronymics.   For sons the affix + father's name can be used for a given or a surname; similarly theophoric names are similarly constructed where - indicates "of the." (dāVaad --> Vaad's son; dāNaahn --> devotee of the God Naahn.)   Regionalisms are often marked with the genetive particle t' as in "of Yth province" --> "t'Yth."

Other names

Headmen of villages, clans, houses, and tribes, have two names their regnal name and their individual name. Both of which can be either the same or completely different. When referring to a baron, his barony, or the house ruling that barony, it is almost exclusively the same name. E.g. Dermrhein is both the ruling house, the northwesternmost barony, in addition to being the surname of its current head, Agschul Dermrhein.   Dermrheini is the genetive form "of Dermrhein" which can mean "of/from the Barony of Dermrhein," "a vassal of House Dermrhein," or "belonging to Lord Baron Dermrhein."

The language of the Qh'énns is called Qh'énnish which is also the designation for the people. It is related to Raachern, Sarnish, and Kharnnish; part of the Qh'Raa linguistic family. The major dialects are regional: Meidrian Qh'énnish (eastern coast), Kélish (southern plain), Qh'énnythian (Kharnnish Alps), and Qhanish (Qhan Barony and southern Breidl).   Descendent languages: Xellish, Rellian, and Gh'ennish. In the Gh'ennish era, Qh'énnish exists as a liturgical language and old names of places and events are retained.
