Iren

Unlike its Confederate neighbour to the north, Iren is pleasantly warm with rich mines and quarries. LLaris its capital is located on an island on the southern tip of the state and is regarded as a high point in architecture. Fishing and sailing are important too and it shares a historical rivalry with Hoat for control of the northern Inner Sea. The current Emperor Til-Lautor is Irenian, somewhat of a matter of pride for the state.

Structure

The Elector Lord of Iren is a hereditary position, and is held by a relatively new House, being appointed to the role in the aftermath of Til-Yaltur unification of the Empire. The upper nobility of the province accepted this under threat of further disbandment of their position, but the Houses who claim lineage from the foundation of the old empire have never accepted the outsider house who is now their ruler. Open dissent is rare, but payment of tithes is often held off until the last possible moment and other requests are slow to be responded to. This has led to a fractious and largely hostile feeling court in Llaris, which the Elector Lord largely avoids by being there as little as possible, and having a hands-off approach to governance. The Elector Lord is far more concerned with naval and trade matters, two things for which Iren is well known for.

Agriculture & Industry

The three prime industries of Iren are mining, trade, and shipbuilding, with a fairly broad split between them all. Prior to the unification of the Empire, Iren had a much more diverse economy, but with the stability that the Empire offers, trade has become a much easier way to a booming economy. Like Imbar to the south, the eastern border of Iren is defined by the Great Escarpment, but unlike its neighbour, the cliffs are not as high, and have a number of openings and caves that lead into the mountains behind. This allows for a lot of prospecting and mining, particularly for silver, gold and lead, which is moved down to the towns and villages on the plains below for smelting and shipping to the harbour at Llaris.   Iren has always focused more on its fleet than the roads, largely as a result of being at the tail end of the Imperial Highways, with very little trade going further north on this side of the Inner Sea. As a result, when it seceded from the Empire with its Confederation allies, it allowed the once impressive road network in its territory to be neglected, and instead relied upon navigable rivers, further highlighting its naval capabilities. Even after the Empire was unified once more under Til-Yaltur, and maintenance of the roads became mandatory once more, Iren has continued to favour its ships. Llaris is well known across the Empire for being tied with Iseld, the capital of Hoat, on the far side of the Inner Sea, as a place to get high quality ships built.
