Sky Sickness

"If you ever see one of these furry fellows above ground, take two large steps back. Quickly. I have a very nice pair of trousers which paid the price for that particular lesson. Learn from my mistake or risk the sloppy, smelly, irreparable consequences."

Cause

The sickness is caused by the ingestion of a combination of toxins peculiar to Laurels. It impacts the Lcha only because they are one of the few species able to survive the atmosphere long enough to experience it.

Upon Seeing The Sky

It is a common misconception that the Lcha get sick upon seeing the sky. The Peacekeepers backed up this assertion, accepting it at face value as a weakness of the Lcha, before realising the truth of the matter.

Symptoms

The symptoms of Sky Sickness vary depending on the amount of time a person is exposed to the toxins in the air.

2 - 4 hours

  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

5 - 6 hours

  • Headaches
  • Blurred Vision
  • Drowziness

7 - 9 hours

  • Blackouts
  • Chest Pains
  • Seizures

Treatment

There are two types of treatment, one which is known as the "old fashioned" treatment and one which was introduced after the Lcha became part of the Peacekeeper Alliance designed by Peacekeeper Efficiency. They are essentially the same, in that the aim of any successful treatment is to remove the toxic elements from the body.
Old Fashioned
The affected person is returned underground and is then laid out on a raised bed in a small room with a very low ceiling and a fire pit in the middle, known as the Treatment Room. This is turned into something of a steam room, which allows the person to breathe and sweat the toxins out of their system.
New Treatment
The affected person is sat in a chair which was designed by Peacekeeper Efficiency and is connected to the person's vein in their arms. This washes the toxins out of their blood and treats the person far quicker than the Old Fashioned version. However, it is far more invasive and therefore less popular.

Social Impact

Sky sickness is the primary reason the Lcha live underground in burrows. This lack of space is said to have led to some of their infamous aggression and is the reason they have evolved the way that they have.   Their eyesight is not good, but they have a strong sense of smell and pick up on changes in the atmosphere around them without needing to see that something has changed. Their hands are designed for burrowing, with reasonable claws which are shovel-shaped.
