Vaspara

Vaspara, the High Emperess of the End, is an ancient lich that dwells in her castle of lost souls in the Realm of Ash. She is the leader of the Cursed Wings. She now appears as a tall slender figure. She drapes herself in angular black robes. Her skin is ivory-white and clings to her form. Her eyes are sunken in and she wears dark makeup. Her most notable feature is the strands of pure necromantic magic that rise from her scalp like needles.   Vaspara is an ancient lich from before Tarrog's Reign. She grew up in a long-fallen noble house. During the height of the Era of Devotion, her family and kingdom were extremely devout to the Deafening Spartan. She chose to deviate from the rest of society and she denounced the gods. The gods' immortality was always seen as an impossible feat for mortals. She fell into a jealous vigor. She studied long-outlawed magics.   She became an extremely powerful necromancer, more so than any before her. She walked through the long-gone kingdoms of northern Countillan taking countless lives in her wake. Eventually, she attempted to reach godhood, and that by her definition was immortality. She became a lich with not just an army but a kingdom of undead behind her. This kingdom was known as the Land Without Souls. The sheer presence of her undead hordes warped and shaped the environment around them. She began to turn the northeastern regions of Countillan into ice.     Mentor of Tarrog
Whispers of visions from the Vile Majesty reached her ears. They spoke of a sleeping behemoth. That same beast broke through the surface of southwestern Countillan with a force and heat so powerful it created what is today known as the Stravallian Desert. Vaspara saw a new ally to be gained. Unfortunately for her, like many other mages and liches, she fell to her arrogance. She met the beast they called Tarrog at the walls of her frozen kingdom. Unlike the fallen civilizations in his wake, she welcomed him into her kingdom as she had no souls for him to feed upon.   She first taught him the power of transmutation. They became close and she viewed him as a son. She taught him all she knew including the ritual to an undead immortality. Once she gave him all the knowledge she had, she asked him to return the favor and offer the bodies he destroyed to her undead kingdom. She was shocked and horrified as she saw his toothly grin expand upon his form as he reverted to his tarrasque form, crushing her and all the knowledge she held.   Time in the Realm of Ash
She reverted to her only remaining phylactery, placed in a castle of lost souls in the Realm of Ash. But as soon as she awoke she knew her mistake. This domain belonged to Lady Death and the amount of disrespect Vaspara presented to Lady Death over her 700 years on Othealia was matched only by Tarrog. She was to be forever confined to her castle of souls unable to join the gods in the cycle of rebirth. She spent her days emmassing undead worshipers in the Realm of Ash. They were more than the weak humanoid forms of Othealia. She ruled nightwalkers, death knights, and vampire lords. If the space and physicality of the Realm of Ash would allow for an empire to form, it would be safe to say she was its empress.   She was known most for her legion of undead dragons with enfeebled minds. They were docile and had lost their understanding. They acted more as beasts or pets than the intelligent dragons of Othealia. She ruled over these beyond-ancient dragons with ease.   It was after the Age of Devotion was ended that she saw an opportunity. Vaspara is never one to let an opportunity slip through her skeletal hands. She organized her forces. Although she would not be able to leave her prison, the army, led by her strongest black dragon, Pharynx, could. She ripped open the barriers that divide the Realm of Ash from the Grove. Through the natural passageways, her army marched towards the land that was once her own.     The Ashen Frost
They arrived upon Countillan and decimated the new empires, only recently recovering from the reign of the Taralich. This charge made all of the northern region of Countillan to be covered in ice and permanently scaring the land and surrounding ocean, creating the Frozen Plate. It seemed like it was over for the societies of northern Othealia. The gods had just established boundaries on their influences. The empires were weak. However, the army, referred to as the Cursed Wings by mortals, had one particular weakness. Their connection to the Grove must be maintained. It was the only thing that tethered the mindless undead to Vaspara's will. Mortals discovered this connection to Vaspara's will and found that the connection was guarded by Pharynx who had set up a lair in the intricate cave system of the Grove.   Ironically it was the worship of the gods that ended Vaspara's attempted invasion. With a chosen champion of the Ichorous General, Bartolk the Arctic, polymorphed, an infiltration team snuck into the undead dragon's lair. A battle ensued for hours. Liches against clerics of the Morning Lord. Vampires against clerics of the Graceful Giver. An ancient white greatwyrm against undead black dragon from the Realm of Ash. Pillars of ice pierced through Pharynx's skeletal form. The acid ate its way through Bartolk's eye sockets. In the end, the massive underground chamber became so unstable the remaining clerics and undead fled. With a final breath weapon, Bartolk shoved a glacier of pure ice through the undead dragon's skull and threw its corpse back, collapsing the chamber. This severed Vaspara's connection to Othealia and Bartolk's life, gone under the weight of Othealia's surface.   War of Shadows
Millennia later, she sent another one of her less powerful dragons (Epicondyle, a green dragon) to invade through the Frozen Plate during the War of Shadows, which was also thwarted by the Court of Countillan and the Knighthood of the Thunderflock Guild, led by Duke Baratove of Ice Crest.   Last Edited By: Onyx   Art created by @petemohrbacher on Instagram.
