The Progs

The Progs were a group of humans intended to monitor The Eyes. Eventually tensions between the Progs and The Eyes led to an insurgent war that led to the elimination of the Progs and the outlawing of the The Deep Writing.

Public Agenda

Monitor and debug the AI programs.

History

The Progs were formally known as the programmers. They were aboard Forlorn Hope to monitor and debug The Eyes. Eventually this led to tensions between the Progs and the Eyes. After launch most crewmates did not have sufficient aptitude scores to become Progs. This led to a decrease in new Progs while The Eyes were experiencing a increase in the amount of data neccesary to coordinate operation of Forlorn Hope. In response to an increased workload the Progs created a pair of new Eyes to aid them. These new Eyes are known collectively as the Tuduks.   The Eyes assesed that the Tuduks were more efficient at the work of monitering and debugging. This made Progs redundant and a waste of limited resources. Wassar chose to retire the Prog work assignment and soley use the Tuduks. This violated the base mandate of the Progs.   In reaction the Progs began to take action to rein in the Eyes. Initially they attempted to sabotage the Eyes by implementing viruses that disrupted Eyes functions. These viruses were intended to not threaten any crew safety. However it would inconvenience them. Erroneous maintenance requests, terminal lockouts, tram scheduling errors and the like. This both allowed the Progs to vent their indignation and attempt to make the Tuduks appear insufficient. This proved unsuccessful.   Frustrated with the lack of results a group of radical Progs decided to take extreme measures. A handful of progs hack into the long range communication systems to contact Earth and request some way to shut down The Eyes . The Eyes  prevented the transmission. Sekdahn convinces Adomos this was a direct threat to the survival of the crew and obtains permission to deploy physical countermeasures.   A group of armed enforcers are deployed. They are not informed of the full details of the threat. Sekdahn only warns them that the Progs inside the designated residence are a direct threat to crewmates lives. The enforcers have never been authorized to use lethal force before now. Their imposing exoarmor and Sekdahn diligent surveillance had been an adequate deterrent in the past.   The raid went poorly for the Progs. A few attempted to resist the initial assault, and the inexperienced enforcers shot them. The survivors surrendered but were declared guilty and sentenced for execution by Sekdahn on the spot.   The image of four unarmed Prog kneeling before four armed enforcers in a corridor proved to be a powerful one. Sekdahn had intended their public and immediate executions to serve as a warning. Instead it served as a rallying cry.   Crewmates began to ostracize the families of the enforcers that raided G23, and vandalize Forlorn Hope to show thier disgust with Sekdahn show of violence. Various riffs on G23 became a common occurrence smeared on corridor walls. Social violence escalated to physical violence.   Forlorn Hope was engulfed in an insurgent war. Between Sekdahn new surveillance measures and Medeah propaganda onslaught the Progs and their supporters were forced to begin engaging in actions that threatened crew safety. They began to assault enforcer patrols. Casualties endured during these actions forced them to raid medical clinics for supplies. Unable to assure the security of critical supplies, Mendar began to restrict these supply to only secure clinics. This shortage of supplies allowed a plague to ravage the Progs and their supporters.   With their numbers reduced Sekdahn was able to apprehend the mutineers and execute any remaining Progs. The knowledge of coding died with them. Any files containing coding instructions were secured to The Eyes use only. Any possession of the forbidden language was punishable by death. The name Prog became something to threaten children with or whisper darkly about.

Disbandment

The last prog is executed after the mutiny and all code language is forbidden.
