University of the Occult

Sited in Trigorod in the Grand Duchy of Novaya, the University of the Occult is the educational and training institution responsible for developing, maintaining, and furthering the magical capabilities of Novaya.
Working in the name of the Grand Duchess Tatyana Nosov and her People, the University's staff and students toil tirelessly to identify and nullify the magical threats throughout the Duchy. Be it dark magic, demons, witchcraft, or arcane monstrosities, the University stands ready to contain the threat.
Certainly, that's the image they'd like to present.

Structure

The University is headed by Chancellor Alina Petrovsky. She is aided by a number of Vice-Chancellors, Deans, and Heads of Department, who busy themselves with the day-to-day of the work involved in administrating the University.
The University's structure reflects its duties, and thus is separated into three departments: the Department of Research, the Department of Training, and the Department of Information. These departments are further subdivided into a variety of magical and administrative specialities and niches, reflecting the broad remit of the University as a whole.

Culture

The University's current duties are threefold, consisting of researching the identification and nullification of magical threats, training new mages to combat or research these magical threats, and providing intelligence and information regarding magical threats to the Order of the Burning Lantern.
As with all things magical and arcane in Novaya, the University's modus operandi means that it is met with toleration at best and active mistrust at worst from Novayans at all levels of government. Indeed, the nobility question the actions, utility, and mere existence of the University almost habitually, frequently and openly advocating for its disbandment in the court of the Grand Duchess. These protestations are for naught, however, as the University enjoys the Duchess' personal patronage and support, and any 'inquiries' the Duchess directs towards the University universally returns with clean slates.

History

The inception and foundation of the University can be traced back to the singular efforts of Alina Petrovsky, whose actions during the Second War for the Frontier proved instrumental to victory. That is not to say that the foundation of the University went without controversy, however.
Inherently mistrustful of magic and sorcery, the University did not — and does not — enjoy popular support among the nobility nor the common people. Backing from the current Grand Duchess, however, ensured the foundation of the University with minimal overt opposition. Nevertheless, the University has fended off numerous attempts to undermine its existence and operations, both from within and without Novaya.
