The Reckoning

'The Reckoning' is an annual winter tradition occuring in the month of Halenfall, primarily practiced in The North.

History

The Reckoning refers to the intiation of the Mortal Wars by Harlak at the end of the Age of the Gods. The Wastes of Harlak are considered the brutal remenants of the devestation that the lord of morality unleashed upon the world, reducing the land to an uninhabitale, desolate wasteland.

Execution

On Reckoning Eve, offerings will generally be made to a god of choice for protection (typically Alerio for Humans, barring Novayans who will instead do so to a god of the Novayan Pantheon). The thresholds of dwelling will then be salted and families will lock their doors and not emerge until sunrise on the day after The Reckoning. In the Grand Duchy of Novaya, local lords will often house the homeless within their great halls during the Reckoning. Upon sunrise on the day post The Reckoning, life resumes as normal.

Observance

The Reckoning is most strictly observed in the Grand Duchy of Novaya due to the supersticious nature of its inhabatiants. Within the urbanised areas of Holzreich, the day is marked but not practiced anywhere near as strictly as tradition calls for. Holzens will often simply make a prayer to Alerio and carry on with their day as normal.
