Devil
A devil is a lawfully aligned Fiend from the Lower Planes.
Devils typically come from Acheron, the Nine Hells, Gehenna, or rarely Hades. Some are functionally immortal manifestations of evil, not known to have a beginning or an end. Others were once Humanoid, drawn into the Lower Plane in the afterlife either through a life of immoral deeds and beliefs or through capture from an existing devil. Their souls gradually transform into forms that reflect their character. A manipulative and vengeful mage might become a Rakshasa, for instance.
Devils exist in a strict hierarchy, from the lowest imps to the highest Archdevils. Particularly low-ranking devils are little more than sparks of malevolence, but mid-tier or higher devils constantly vie for more souls to enthrall. If a devil either kills a mortal or signs a contract with them, their immortal soul becomes a devil who ranks below the original devil. The more underlings a devil has, the greater their rank increases.
