Soul

A soul is the essential immortal spirit that resides within all Humanoid beings. It is forged upon their birth and never extinguished, unless by exceptional immortal means.
Only humanoids are known to have souls. Elemental, Fey, Fiend, or other creatures do not have souls. A fundamental property of the soul is its ability to change alignments, given outside influences; thus, creatures of non-humanoid origins such as these fundamentally cannot have souls.

Manifestation

A soul is typically invisible within the body, except in a dream state. When a body dies, its soul departs, and is visible on the Liminal Plane and Outer Planes. The soul is typically identical in form to the body, in a whole and healthy form. An exception may occur if the gender of the soul does not match its body, in which case the visible soul's appearance will differ so as to better align with its true gender.
The most common way for a soul to be seen by mortals is as a ghost. This can happen if a soul struggles mightily against removal to the Liminal Planes upon its death, usually because of a powerful desire to see through a purpose it has left unfinished on the Material Plane. A soul trapped in this way likely will not realize it no longer belongs to a body, and will remain on the Material Plane until its purpose is fulfilled or it is banished by violent means.
