List of Menagerie Members

Many mercenaries have served in the Menagerie over the years, including numerous minor characters.

B

Basilisk

Basilisk (female dragonborn) was the company's purser. A red dragonborn, Basilisk had a narrow face, small spectacles and a tattered uniform. The only green clothing they owned was their shabby graduation robe. Basilisk was constantly amazed at the new ways the company can squander money and make dumb mistakes. She loathed disorganization and especially Mouse, who did nothing but cause trouble and make a mess of her papers. Originally a hostage working for Rubicon bandits, Basilisk volunteered to join the company out of pity the moment she got a look at the accounts. She – somewhat begrudgingly – took Mouse under her wing but acted exasperated by their antics. She normally didn't fight, unless the company's numbers are so few that all fought.
  • Relationship (Mouse): Tutor

Blink

Blink (male worg) was once a young pup in the Ongra qorhv of central Khûm. Their qorhv devastated by the black bloat until only the worgs remained, they waylaid the Commander's Tent and, upon disclosing that they'd slain Tyrodax the Wyrmling, the qorhv sent a young worg named Grawmor to accompany them. Eager to see the world but inexperienced, Blink earned his name by the speed at which he ran about the camp, full of boundless energy. He fought among the scouts.
  • Relationship (Umber): Protector
  • Relationship (Griffon): Younder Brother

Beholder

Beholder (male dwarf) was the company's unofficial chronicler. A gray-bearded dwarf, Beholder had quite visibly seen it all. He wore a big green scarf over his shoulder and constantly made notes in his small notebook. A grim and brooding figure, Beholder fancied himself a chronicler for the company. He was teased mercilessly for his poe-faced attitude but this only made him double down on the schtick. One of Tchari Thrak's qorhv, Beholder fought alongside the Commander for decades – and recorded all the history he’s seen, always claiming that one day he'd publish his account. He fought in the artillery.
  • Relationship (Remorhaz): Confidant

C

Cerberus

Cerberus (female dragonborn) was a natural-born bully. She liked to surround herself with toadies, who would often rubberstamp her schemes. She often played the innocent but all knew she was always up to something. A famous malcontent, Cerberus joined the company during its tenure in Papha. She spent time as a gladiator in Papha’s fighting pits but was famous for convincing others to fight her battles. A green dragonborn, Cerberus wore a leopard hide and leather pauldrons, exposing her scarred chest and her history in the pits. She particularly liked to bully Mouse, whom she saw as little more than a weak child. She fought in the infantry.
  • Relationship (Mouse): Bully

Cyclops

Cyclops (male halfling) was once a doughy farmer's son. Joining the company with a young Unicorn, originally called Ogre due to his height, Cyclops stayed when his friend retired and, over the years, matured into a hard-fighting, hard-drinking mercenary veteran. He lost his eye during the Papha contract and had a dagger tattooed over the spot. Once a thorough goodbody, now Cyclops has rotted to the core. He drinks, smokes and wenches, with a vulgar mouth and a nihilistic outlook. He fought in the artillery.
  • Relationship (Unicorn): Childhood Friend

D

Displacer

Displacer (female human) was a young soldier during the Night Wars and one of the few human veterans in the company. Well into her sixties, she wears a pair of heavy bandoliers, laden with gear, and a black headband across her forehead. Nervous by nature, she earned her name from constantly leaving things behind and took to wearing the bandoliers so she doesn't forget them. She fought in the infantry.
  • Relationship (Remorhaz): Liability

G

Gargoyle

Originally known as Sister Slate, Gargoyle (female dwarf) was the leader of the nûnramali that the company recruited in Banishment. Having taken a vow of silence, Gargoyle communicates through a proxy – a dwarven interpreter named Vurgi – and is known for her unrelenting, stubborn nature. She wears an iron mask over the lower half of her face, to prevent her from speaking and breaking her oath.
  • Relationship (Remorhaz): Irritant

Girallon

Girallon (male human) was once an upbeat and jovial soldier. Following the sacking of Papha and the death of his family, however, he fell into a depressed slump. He had little regard for the company but, with nowhere else to go, remained with them ever since. A tall and gangly young man, he wore his hair in a mullet, the sides shaved. He carries a motley collection of weapons – flail, glaive, pick. His name comes from all the "arms" he carried – a flail, a glaive and a pick. He fought in the infantry.

H

Harpy

Once the last of his kind in the company, Harpy (male worg) served at the Commander's side since the end of the Night Wars. Whelped sometime during the Night of Twenty Moons, Harpy fought countless battles and bore the scars to prove it. He was a constant companion and guardian to both of the Commander's sons and, though he rarely spoke, he often provided sage advice when most they needed it. He earned his name from his tendency to "sing", howling late into the night to signal his presence to other worgs. He fought in the scouts.
  • Relationship (Griffon): Guardian
  • Relationship (Umber): Guardian

Hook

Hook (female goblin) was the company's resident malcontent. Always griping over this or that, Hook liked to make trouble, to rabble-rouse among the common soldiery. Among the mercenaries traded to the company from the Iron Word by Yorgos of Nyre, she harbored a special distrust of him and, by extension, of Griffon. Short and flat-faced, with wide, bat-like ears, Hook was notable for the rows of earrings along both ears. She earned her name from the long grudges she held, much like a hook horror. She fought in the infantry.
  • Relationship (Griffon): Subordinate

Hyena

Hyena (female orc) was a heavyset orcish member of the infantry. Notable for her bear-paw tattoo and the bone ring she wore in her hair, she was named for her iconic, chortling laugh. Born and raised among the company during the occupation of Papha, she didn't have much connection with her orcish ancestry and reveled in any chance to connect with it. Her easy-going demeanor was recently affected by the birth of her first child, young Banshee (male orc), named for the way his cries kept the camps awake at night.
  • Relationship (Umber): Avuncular

I

Invisible

A young pickpocket on the streets of Papha, Invisible (female air genasi) joined the company after she attempted to steal from some of its members. Growing up among the rough-and-tumble mercenary band, Invisible honed her skills over the years, becoming one of its stealthiest assets. She nonetheless maintained her carefree attitude the entire time, as easygoing as her free-flowing hair. She has a competitive relationship with Mouse, for they share a similar background. Following Stirge's demotion, Invisible became the Menagerie's new intelligencer. She fought in the scouts.
  • Relationship (Mouse): Mentor

M

Mermaid

Mermaid (male orc) was one of Cerberus' toadies. His namesake and most distinguishing feature was his long and flowing blonde hair, which he took very particular care of. Vain and dimwitted, Mermaid made a natural henchman. As long as he was flattered and properly motivated, he was willing for any manner of mischief. Along with Cerberus and the younger Unicorn, he particularly favored bullying Mouse. He fought in the infantry.

Mule

Named for his tendency to lug equipment for his archer companions, Mule (male human) is a good-natured mercenary with something of a simple streak. Bald and bearded, he's known for the green cap he wears over his head and for his hefty stomach. Many in the company – Cerberus most of all – enjoy pulling pranks on the gullible Mule, exploiting how trustworthy he is. He fought in the artillery.

P

Pegasus

Pegasus (male human) was an otherwise unremarkable member of the company. Originally from Obsidios, Pegasus was known for his playful attitude, infectious laugh and love of practical humor. He earned his name by the pranks and horsing around he was prone to, always up to some mischief or another. He had short brown hair, shaved on the sides, with a small thin mustache over a perpetual grin. He briefly dated Willow and was, for a time, Remorhaz's romantic rival. He fought in the cavalry.

Recruited as a gladiator in Jarkoth, Tarsk the Troll (male orc), called Troll, resembled Umber in almost every way – broad, bald and burly. Will-O'-Wisp

Will-O'-Wisp (female half-elf), often called simply Willow, was a veteran mercenary of the company. The unwanted daughter of a high elven aristocrat, Willow ran away to join the Cymbian military, where she met Remorhaz. When their unit collapsed during the Night Wars, they were both adopted by the Commander's qorhv and they've fought together ever since. She was a naturally flirty and sportive person, her nickname a reference to the number of potential lovers that she'd supposedly lead to heartbreak. A skilled archer, she fought in the artillery.
  • Relationship (Remorhaz): Crush
  • Relationship (Unicorn): Former Lover

Former Mercenaries

Pudding

Named for his cast-iron stomach, Zhok Brightshard or Pudding (male dwarf) grew a great busy beard so long, he tucked its end into his belt – potentially in an effort to distract from his belly. A little browbeaten, Pudding was long-suffering – his moniker a dagger every time he heard it – but harbored a deep-seated dislike for Umber, the one who named him, specifically. Over time, though, the two grew a genuine friendship between them, when Umber helped him reconcile with his estranged family in Truethrone. He fought in the infantry.
  • Relationship (Umber): Pal
  • Departure: Following the Khûm contract, Pudding elected to stay behind in Truethrone and reconnect with his family – and to help the young king Makem the Mumbler claim his throne.

Stirge

Strige (female human) was the company's intelligencer. Recruited in Rubicos during the Brigandia contract, Stirge was a quiet and taciturn figure. She earned her name by the way she spoke – always whispering in the person's ear, like a buzzing insect. She was recognizable by her straight brown hair, sunken eyes and red bandana that she pulled across her mouth, to prevent anyone from reading her lips. Stirge was eventually revealed to be a spy, working for Yorgos of Nyre, feeding the party false information. She fought first in the cavalry, then in the scouts.
  • Relationship (Griffon): Suspicion
  • Relationship (Remorhaz): Comrade
  • Departure: When her cover was blown during the Khûm contract, she defected back to the Iron Word.

Unicorn

Vezlin, called Unicorn, (male human) was one of the company's newest recruits. While young, Unicorn was surprisingly large and muscular. A little awkward in his body, he was also occasionally clumsy, undercutting his imposing physique. Shy and uncertain, Unicorn got his name from his utter lack of sexual experience. Rather than help him get laid, his friends would rather tease him. Recruited in Tharzavok in 65 2A, Unicorn was one of the newest – and youngest – members of the company, quickly folded into Cerberus’ ranks. He fought in the infantry.
  • Death: Ritualistically murdered by vampire spawn of Caliphar II in Izla, 67 2A

Yazram Bracebow

Yazram Bracebow (male dwarf) was Khosava's second-in-command among the siege engineers. Grim and humorless, Yazram was dedicated to his duty and had little time for laziness or shoddy workmanship. He only reluctantly joined the company, at Khosava's insistence, and harbored deep resentments for Dûnya and the company as a whole. He wore his beard in a loop below his chin. He fought in the siege engineers.
