Caliphar II

Caliphar II was a vampire wretch and the former ruler of Vhakizla. A Thanasian conqueror during the early days of the Night Wars, he spearheaded the assault on Sapphros and, while the rest of the undead armies moved further inland, he settled in the lands he conquered and ruled his new necrostate for three decades.

History

Night Wars

Precious little was known of Caliphar II before he and his undead forces attacked Vhakizla in 899 2A. His name suggested a parentage from one of the great vampire lords of Thanatos but, even by the time of his defeat in the Second Age, nothing of his personal history was known to the wider world.
He was proven to be an able commander on the field. While the draconic legions had initial success against his undead forces, once the rivers were stopped, there was little that could stop Caliphar II's forces from rolling over the living armies. Vhakizla the Valiant herself was driven from the field in a fateful battle before Izla.

Second Age

Upon defeating the dragon and taking hold of her nation, Caliphar II ascended to the mountainous capital of Vhak and declared himself ruler over all of Vhakizla. Those few who resisted him either fled or died from the black bloat thereafter. Those few that remained were wholly devoted to him.
In 4 2A, he ordered the construction of the Fangs, an impregnable fortress still higher on the slopes of Mount Zyraxes. He adopted much of Vhakizla's ruling structure, though he replaced the Cult of Vhakizla with a Cult of Caliphar, and replaced the dragon's sycophants with a ruling council of his own undead advisors, including Logistos Tefar, Hierarch Osakamos and Stratego Kharix. Much of his time was spent away from his newly made fortress, however, as he seemed to fall in love with the people of Izla and enjoyed their fervent worship of him.
In 35 2A, however, Vhakizla – now a dracolich – unexpectedly returned and assailed the Fangs while Caliphar II was absent. She collapsed one of the towers and thereby destroyed his sarcophagus. It was unknown whether this outright slew the vampire but he nonetheless disappeared.
Following his defeat, Vhakizla took control of his necrostate and resumed its leadership – now as a necrotyrant.
Even decades after his defeat and disappearance, however, belief and worship of Caliphar II remained strong in Izla, despite all Vhakizla's efforts to stamp it out. The Sanguine – one part insurgency, one part religious cult – remain devoted to him and to overthrowing the dracolich again, to make room to resurrect their vampire overlord.

The Menagerie

• Vhakizla: On contract from the dracolich, it was the duty of the Menagerie to not only root out and crush the Sanguine in Izla but also to find and destroy Caliphar II, wherever he hid. It was Vhakizla's belief that he yet lived, hidden somewhere in the realm.
