Alchemist's Fire

Alchemist's fire was a fluid that ignited when exposed to air. While non-magical and created by an alchemist, it was especially resistant to water and could only be extinguished when smothered, oftentimes with sand. Invented by Clan Quicklime, it first saw popularity during the Night Wars but quickly became associated with naval warfare of the early Second Age.

Description

Alchemist's fire was a viscous liquid that stuck to most everything it touched. Upon contact with air, it burst into flames and burned until it was consumed or put out. Because of this, it was frequently stored in breakable flasks and used as a thrown weapon and in traps.   It was characterized both by how unquenchable it was and by its brightly colored – most often purple – flame.

History

Night Wars

While it was originally developed years earlier in Khûm, alchemist's fire first saw widespread use by dwarven siege engineers during the Night Wars, where it was often employed to destroy the dead.

Second Age

When the Silver Saber attacked the Zah Potency, they used alchemist's fire, shot from a catapult, to disable the treasure galley's naval escort.
