Summer Camp 2021 Pledge
Why worldbuild?
I'm using World Anvil to host the world/story bible for the Steiner-Oavánson Adventures - a series of fantasy-adventure novels described as 'Indiana Jones with wizards'. I recently finished the first draft of Steiner-Oavánson and the Sharktooth King and I'm resting it before I tackle the second draft. In order to make a consistent and living world, I need to know more about some of the local cultures and the recent history of the world, particularly those parts which feed into the antagonist's motivation. What are you building?
The Steiner-Oavánson world is currently called Ærð (naming is definitely not one of my strong suits, but it's unlikely to get dealt with during Summer Camp). It's a high fantasy world fusing ubiquitous magic with inter-war tech. During Summercamp and World Ember 2020, I laid down some things I knew and figured out what I didn't, but the prompts spawned more plot bunnies than I knew what to do with. For Summercamp 2021, I'm tying things together and keeping the focus on what I need to know for the stories I have and not spawing any more (a resolution that I do not imagine will last the month).Which area(s) are you working on?
I created my WA account days before the beginning of Summer Camp 2020, and spent the month bouncing around and filling out the broad strokes of the world, documenting things I needed to know to get started. This year, I've got a manuscript that needs some foundations, so I'll be fleshing out the continents of Ewas and Ewura, with a focus on the culture and recent history, especially the Mage War, and the aftermath.Support network
None, yet. I want to find more worldbuilders for feedback, so that'll be something to explore, probably starting with r/goodworldbuilding and the World Anvil and Writer's Block discords.Writing time
