South Erwa

Geography

The southern half of the Erwā supercontinent, Ewas is divided from its sister, Ewura by the Gnóttvǫllr pass. Less mountainous than its northern neighbour, much of Ewas has been subject to glacial erosion, leaving granite and gneiss peaks, wide glacial valleys, and deep fjords.

Ecosystem

Two-thirds of the continent is either tundra or taiga, with average annual temperatures rarely reaching above single figures except in the northermonst regions, while the south is perennially icebound. Consequentuially, what appear on paper to be to be large, self-styled 'empires' are, in reality, vast tracts of uninhabitable wilderness, mostly forest comprising a mix of spruce, pine, birch and larch.
Further north, the climate warms and, above 40°S, the ice gives way to grassland, deciduous forest, and temperate rainforests..

Ecosystem Cycles

Temperature deltas in Ewas are extreme - the summers are short and wet, between one and three months, depending on longitude, and the winters are long and cold, with temperatures down to -20 °C for much of the year. During the winter, the large bay encircled by Bjeria - tou̯nou̯htoi̯ ou̯pɑi̯ - freezes over completely, facilitating the migration of herds of Urus, elk and mammoth in search of better grazing.

History

Fifth age

Eastern Ewas has recently (5.912-5.919) been ravaged by the Mage War and the Keene Revolt of 5.918, which led to the overthrow of the Bjerian monarchy and the an upsurge in anti-royalist sentiment in neghbouring countries. Consequentially, the eastern coutries are only now beginning the slow progress of rebuilding and finding a brittle peace.

Tourism

Prior to 5.910, tourism had been mostly intra-continental, with Ewas citizens travelling within their own continent, with the north-east being particular popular for its beaches and longer summers, and the south-west for hunting and winter sports.
At present, tourism to the continent is ill-advised due to political instability.
