The gods lock themselves and other semidivine being behind the divine gate. This makes it so that while mortals can travel to gods, the gods cannot threaten the world of mortals with their presence. This severely weakened the mortals below temporarily causing the long lived races to have human lifespans and dooming multiple civilizations to ruin with the earthfall that happened at the same time.
