Prince Súrr

Prince Súrr

The Kyrians suffered the most of all after Orfodwhelm's rise. Killing a boy, even for what he represents is... Dark and hollow for a man's soul.
— Everam, Teller of Nimenra
The last king of the Kingdom of Kyrkas is considered Prince Súrr of Kyrkas, the son of Ivarek III. Súrr lost his father and mother to the invading Orfordsmen that later also took his life. He left the world young and left a legacy as a tragic symbol for the Kyrans' fall from power. Kyrians in the former capital of Surthem built a chapel for the prince out of what remained of the old royal castle where today they offer their condolences for the loss of his young life.

History

Early Life

The last prince of Kyrkas was born in 1222 to king Ivarek III and queen Renia as the king's only son. Having tried for a long time to be blessed with one, Ivarek spent much of his time with Súrr during his early years, even with Orfordwhelm becoming more aggressive with each passing year. Eventually, his father's duties took him away from the young prince and Súrr was left with his mother and the rest of the family.
Growing up Súrr spent a lot of his life wondering about his father's absence after his seventh birthday. However, Ivarek took his time to give his son presents, the most famous he was given was a flute. He showed great talent immediately and would each day he could in between his nobility lessons play on the instrument. There are well-known tales of him playing for visiting nobility and dignitaries of other countries that agreed on his ability and aptitude for music, comparing him to legendary bards.
Unfortunately for him the Gods and world would have other plans for him and his family.

The last breath of a country, and its prince

In 1248 the third war of his father's reign started with Orfordwhelm advancing across Grensriver, also known as Vieavon. Mustering the remaining forces he could, Ivarek and his wife Renia went out to defend the remaining Kyrian lands from the invaders. Súrr was to remain at home as he always had, playing on his flute while waiting for their return. It was only three weeks later that he received news of both his parent's deaths. He stopped from that day one to play the flute.
Less is known of what he did afterwards. According to tellers, Súrr isolated himself and estranged from everyone at court. His happy outglow turned to nothing but cold sorrow. Even as he was pronounced king, he showed little emotion for it. The Hopeless War, as it would be called, soon reached Surthem's walls and the enemies showed little mercy as they breached the city in two weeks. As brave defenders tried a hopeless defence of the keep, the Orfordians and their allies pierced through. Whatever happened inside there have always been speculations... The only thing that is known is that Súrr's flute was heard a last time as the city was burning when it was struck silent. Prince Súrr was killed at the age of eleven in the keep, leaving Nimenra as the last ruler of Kyrkas.

Legacy

The prince became something of a symbol for the tragic fate that the Kyrians suffered from The Hopeless War. The prince's remains were brought out first a day after the siege was over by a court page. Many mourned his loss and with what little strength they could muster they built a rudimentary coffin out of stone which was placed in the city market square amongst burning buildings. A chapel was later built and the coffin was moved inside, together with the prince's beloved flute. Surthem was left in ruins and ruled by Orfordwhelm from that point on and they made little attempt to rebuild their former overlord's capital.
The events leading to the fall of Kyrkas, especially the prince's fate has inspired bards, poets and authors. Since the child was innocent, not even reached manhood for rulership of the time or later he symbolises how horrible war is. Even more, have pointed out the unnecessary cruelty that was done to the boy and Kyrians by Orfordwhelm. The prince lives in many ways in the Kyrians' cultural soul to remember a day of freedom, something that was lost and perhaps also slowly forgotten with the death of the prince.
