Sonya Snowborne

Sonya Snowborne is a quiet and meek former adventurer with an education in wizardry and immense natural talent for creating magic items. She was saved from a near-death experience by the adventurer K after her companions were killed and accidentally proposed to him when she gave him a magic ring she'd made in thanks for the rescue while unaware of bugbear marriage customs. The flustered and red-faced Sonya sputtered at the situation but couldn't find herself able to deny it as K promised he'd get her a worthy ring as soon as he could and took her out to dinner. He accomplished this not long after, giving her a gold ring set with star rose quartz he'd made after finding the component pieces as part of Captain Xavier's Lost Treasure.   Table of Contents

Pre-Campaign

Sonya Snowborne is the daughter of a human and half-elf (snow elf) who emigrated to Haven City from the Lhodos Tundra, managing to flee the country before the tyrannical King Flurious rose to power. Her parents became a pair of moderately successful merchants living in Haven City's midtown, doing well enough to send Sonya to a wizarding school where she became an apprentice mage. Despite learning the basics of wizardry through long hours of study, Sonya worried that she has little natural talent with spellcasting. While her assessment was correct, she slowly began to discover that while her spellcasting was weak it was extremely easy for her to create magic items if she had the right materials. Still, she worried that giving up on 'proper' wizardry would disappoint her parents who had worked so hard to offer her an education.

Danger and Rescue

Sonya was one of a group of four newbie adventurers who were hired to investigate sightings of strange, small creatures in a local coal mine. Unbeknownst to them, a section of the Shadowfell had become intertwined with the mine and shadow goblins were running loose in the place. The vicious goblins attacked Sonya and her companions, killing one of them as the rest of them fled deeper into the tunnels. Another was killed in the deepest part of the twisting tunnels and her remaining companion abandoned her, trying to flee down a chasm before the goblins cut his rope. Sonya managed to shove herself into a narrow crevice while the goblins weren't looking. She was safe, for the time being, but now trapped in the heart of the goblin-infested area.   She ran out of food and water after the second day. Hunger and thirst that she'd never before had to deal with began to set in. It was worse because she couldn't let herself sleep, fearing that if she closed her eyes for even a moment to goblins would find her and end her life. As her exhaustion grew, terror took her as she came to the conclusion that she was going to die here. As sleep finally began to take her unwillingly, she was jostled awake by the sounds of combat in the next chamber. It only went on for a short time before she heard voices talking. Though they were too murmured for her to understand what they were saying, she recognized they were speaking Common rather than Goblin. Given her state, Sonya wondered if her fatigue had begun to cause hallucinations.   When a bugbear entered the chamber, terror shook her heart. The regular goblins were bad enough, and now here was the most powerful type of goblinoid of all. Her fingers weakly clutched around the crossbow she'd kept in her hand these last few days. But in her weakened state, she had not the strength to lift it. Seeing her panic, the bugbear identified himself as K and stated he was part of a rescue party. He was able to earn her trust fairly quickly by offering Sonya food and water, which she gulped down and nearly choked on despite K trying to convince her to pace herself. K could see that Sonya couldn't stand well on her own and carried her out of her hiding place, then escorting her out of the mine entirely with his friends help.   The adventurers left Sonya in the care of the miners as they returned to the mine to defeat the fey that had caused this whole mess. While they did that, a few of the workers escorted Sonya to her parent's home at her request. Her parents could scarcely believe the state their daughter was in and spent the next several days nursing her back to health. Sonya was clearly traumatized by what she'd been through, making the immediately decision to give up adventuring and pursue a much safer career working in a shop somewhere. But she had something else she needed to take care of first.

Accidental Engagement

Sonya wanted to find the man that had rescued her and thank him, but quickly realized she had no real way to do so. She hadn't gotten his name and "bugbear" was a general enough description she'd never be able to find a specific person going off just that. Despite wanting to steer clear of it, she returned to the coal mine to ask about the adventurers who'd rescued her. The foreman didn't know the bugbear's name and said that particular group of adventurers didn't seem to have a moniker. He did catch the name of one of their companions though, Vinnie Vice, who the foreman claimed had tricked him into paying for a ludicrous amount of drinks.   Knowing such a man was likely to frequent the city's taverns, Sonya began to spend her days wandering the city in hopes of reuniting with her rescuers. Before her companions had died, she'd been working on a magic ring for one of them to use in their adventures. With no use for the ring herself, and remembering seeing a bow among K's equipment that would compliment the ring's magic, she intended to give it to him in thanks. But rather than Sonya finding K, K found her with a little advice he'd received from the River King, who'd noticed the young woman wandering near the Moonflow River's shores these past several days.   She was surprised when the man she'd been looking for called out to her and was suddenly there. Sonya had thought out this meeting and what she would say over and over again in her head, yet she froze. Days of preparation were not enough to overcome her lifetime of meekness and her voice stumbled out of her mouth as all her thoughts tried to form into words at once. Mumbling, she gave K the Ring of Volleys she'd made and told him she intended to find a nice store to work in. K quickly grew flustered, though still not nearly as much as Sonya, and took her offering of the ring as a marriage proposal. Sonya's face turned bright red as K promised to find the perfect ring for her and asked for her name.   He told Sonya that her name was fit for an angel. K told her he was bound to the Underdark soon on an expedition, but begged that she wait for him until he returned. Starting to feel dizzy, all Sonya could muster in reply was a soft, "Ok..." K then asked if Sonya was hungry and took her to one of his favorite places to eat when she said yes, spending the rest of the evening talking to his new fiancée and getting to know her better.

Spending Time with K

K made sure to spend as much time together with Sonya as he could before having to leave for an expedition into the Underdark. He gave her a ring he'd set himself, assembled from pieces found among Captain Xavier's Lost Treasure. But he began to worry about her well being during his upcoming absence and wanted to make sure she'd have a place to stay. K was more than willing to leave the rest of the treasure he'd found with her, but would much prefer to buy her a home to live in rather than just leaving her coin to rent a place. With that in mind, the pair headed for the Bank of Morgul to apply for a home loan.   Things seemed to be going well with the undead loan officer until he suddenly looked confused. He left the room for a short time after checking K's blood sample for curses and the like, which the pair speculated might have something to do with K's fey curse. The loan officer returned and told them he would have to deny the loan not because of the fey curse but because powerful necromancy magic had been placed on K. Though the bank's magical tests couldn't tell exactly what the effects were, it was stronger magic than that they used for contracts and the two magics were incompatible. Floored by this revelation and suddenly very worried, Sonya practically dragged K out of the building and towards her church where a cleric could examine him.   She got the two of them an audience with Sister Luna, the head of local church of Sehanine Moonbow, Elven Lady of Dreams, but warned K her church was extremely opposed to necromancy in all its forms and wasn't sure entirely how they'd react to this. Thankfully, Sister Luna proved sympathetic and revealed that K's soul was missing from his body; somehow, he'd been turned into a Hollow One. The necromancy was all that was linking his disembodied soul to his body and there was no way to remove it safely. This revelation sent Sonya into a near-panic that K had to calm her down from, promising her that everything would be ok as she promised him she'd pray for him every day, multiple times a day.   Before they could discuss the situation further, they happened to bump into Ernest who introduced a new expedition member named Sunny to them. This interruption was itself interrupted as K's curse randomly triggered and pulled him into the Ethereal Plane, much to Sonya's distress.

Journey Into the Underdark Arc

K's adventurer friends were forced to flee Haven City shortly thereafter to escape the wrath of the Crows, kickstarting their journey into the Underdark as members of the Thaig Expedition. With assistance from another member of the Expedition, Villamax the Wizard, K was able to keep in regular contact with Sonya and exchange letters. She even convinced Villamax to briefly teleport back to Haven City at one point, picking up a pair of Gloves of Thievery she'd made for K after taking a job at . The gloves had hearts stitched into them and came with a letter informing K that she'd been learning to work as an artificer & listing the address of her new workplace.
