Kingdom of Karlsgard
The Kingdom of Karlsgard is a resource weak but militarily strong imperialist nation. For centuries, the region was ruled by a malevolent red dragon that viewed the humanoids living there as slaves at best or food at worst. This lasted until a band of adventurers managed to rise up and slay the dragon, their leader Karl becoming the first king of Karlsgard. But even with the dragon slain, it takes much time for the land to fully recover from a red dragon's rule, something that is still in progress today.
While Karlsgard has not made any aggressive actions against their neighbors, they have retained a standing military even after slaying the last of the red dragon's followers. Rumors indicate the red dragon had connections to the Church of Tiamat, which largely controls the Ashes Archipelago to the south, and that Karlsgard is either expecting a counterattack or planning to launch a campaign of their own against the Dragon Queen's worshipers.
